The Colby Volunteer Fire Department was called to the Maurice Courtney home at Route 1, Colby, on Saturday, March 6, 1976 at 12:45 p.m.

According to Fire Chief Royal Awe, flames were confined to the center of the house when firemen arrived, but the dense smoke throughout the three story house created a handicap for a short time.

The house is still standing, but Chief Awe said the inside is a shell and burned out.

No estimate of damage is known at this time. Very few household items and clothes were salvaged due to the fire and water damage.

Firefighters stayed on the scene until 5:30 p.m.

Dean Courtney, a son of the Courtney’s, was taken to the Colby Clinic, where he received five stitches for a cut finger.

Mr. and Mrs. Courtney are staying in a borrow camper on their property. Their four children, ages 18, 15, 11 and 8 are staying with three different families in the area.
