Haight, Hugh G. (18 June 1897 – 14 May 1982)

Hugh G. Haight, a former Clark County district attorney and longtime member of the county bar, passed away on Monday evening, May 14, at St. Joseph’s Hospital, Marshfield. Mr. Haight was 84 at the time of his death. He had remained active in his law practice until about two weeks ago when he became ill and had to be hospitalized.

Memorial services for Mr. Haight will be held today (Thursday, May 27) at 1:30 p.m. from the Gesche Funeral Home. The Rev. Gary Clark of the Neillsville United Church of Christ was to officiate. No visitations will be held. (The body was to be cremated with interment at a later date.)

Haight was born on June 18, 1897, in Medford to Wellington and Diana (Keyes) Haight. He received his early education in Medford Schools and then attended what was then known as Stevens Point Normal College. He later transferred to UW-Madison from where he earned his bachelor’s degree. Hight then transferred to Marquette University in Milwaukee where he completed his law degree after two years in 1923. It was during this time that he married Sadie A. Ludovic in December 22, 1922, Milwaukee ceremonies.

The Haight’s made their home in Milwaukee from 1923 to 1925, where he practiced law. They then moved to Loyal where he practiced law until running for Clark County District Attorney in 1930. After his election, the couple moved to Neillsville; he served as DA for four years.

After his public service, Haight continued to practice law in Neillsville. He was a member of he Marshfield Elks Club and the American, Wisconsin and Clark County Bar Associations.

Surviving him is a brother, Archie, now of Quincy, Illinois, and prior to that for a short time Neillsville; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife (August 4, 1977, two sisters and three brothers.
