Daniel Roy Zier (30 Sept 1948 - 1 July 2000)

Daniel Roy Zier, 51, Owen, died July 1, at Victory Medical Center, Stanley.

Funeral services for Daniel were held on Wednesday, July 5, at St. Bernard’s Catholic Church in Abbotsford with Father Al Jakubowski and Rev. Robert Everhard presiding.  Burial was in the Abbotsford Public Cemetery.  Pallbearers were Mike McCarron, Jim Stauner, Calvin Smart, Russ Smart, Louie Murray, Terry Ludwig, Albert “Sid” Johnson and Kenny Christensen.

Daniel Zier was born on Sept. 30, 1948 in Scottsbluff, Neb., to Clarence and Wilma (Sabaska) Zier.  He was baptized and confirmed at St Peter Lutheran Church in Dorchester.  He moved to Siren in 1950.  His early education was at Dorchester Elementary.  He attended Dorchester-Abbotsford High School and graduated from Colby High School in 1966.  As a young man, he worked for Mertens’ Garage at Dorchester Corners and in the summer worked for Art Craft in Spencer.  He was a 1970 graduate of UW-La Crosse.  Following his graduation, he worked in air conditioning in Tucson, Ariz.  In 1971 he returned to Dorchester and worked at Meyer’s Manufacturing.  In 1973 he began working at Dorchester Cooperative and in 1987 he became manager of Christensen’s Feed Mill in Abbotsford. 

Dan and Diane Smart were united in marriage on July 5, 1978 in Wisconsin Rapids.

Dan was on the Dorchester Village Board for six years and was a sports enthusiast.  He was on the Meadowview Golf Course board for five years, serving as vice-president for three years.  He recently moved from Dorchester to Owen. 

Survivors are his wife Diane, Owen; one son, Derek and one daughter, DeAnn, both of Owen; one brother, Sam (Linnea) Zier, Abbotsford; three sisters; Janis McCarron, Abbotsford, Rebecca (Sid) Johnson, Tucson, Ariz. and Debra (Louis) Murray, Black River Falls; his father- and mother-in-law, Lea and Merceda Smart of Abbotsford; and brothers-in-law, Calvin (Sue), Larry and Russ (Frieda) Smart, and sisters-in-law, Janice (Terry) Ludwig, Carol (Jim) Stauner and Bernice Grajek.

He was preceded in death by his father, Clarence on Oct. 25, 1989, and his mother, Wilma on Dec.24, 1992.

In lieu of flowers, memorials in Dan’s name are appreciated and will be designated to the Meadowview Golf Course.
