Owen - Carl D. Thorne, age 69, of Owen, passed away a.m. on Friday, August 31, 2018 at Aspirus Wausau Hospital.

A Memorial Service will be held 1:00 p.m. on Friday, September 14, 2018 at St. John's Lutheran Church in Withee. The Rev. Tom Myhre will officiate. Family and friends are welcome from 10:00 a.m. until time of service Friday at the church. Full Military Honors provided by the Lublin American Legion Post #547, the Owen American Legion Post #123 and the

Owen-Withee Vets Club. The Maurina-Schilling Funeral Home in Owen is entrusted with the arrangements.

Carl was born on June 20, 1949, the son of Floyd and Jeanette (Thede) Thorne in Marshfield, WI. He graduated from Owen-Withee High School in 1968 and worked for Bliven Chevrolet in Owen as a mechanic before he enlisted in the U. S. Navy. Carl served from 1968-72. Carl was aboard the USS Coral Sea during the Viet Nam War. When Carl returned home he went into the logging business with his father until his death in December, 1974. Carl continued Thorne's Logging as well as ran the sawmill with his mother by his side. In earlier years, Carl helped the Owen-Withee Fire and Ambulance Department, with barn and house fires. Carl also worked as the the elementary janitor for the Owen-Withee Schools for 18 years. He also drove bus for Thornedyke Bus Lines for 18 years. Carl also worked loading the sawmill decks with saw logs for the Amish in the Greenwood area until he was diagnosed with ALS in March 2017. That in itself just about killed him because he liked that type of work and the people he got to work with and meet.

Carl's special truck was his 1980 AutoCar Contrucktor 2, which was the special featured Truck at the 1980 Logging Congress at Tomahawk, WI. He was always told his first wife was the AutoCar and Norene was the second. When he sold his truck at auction in 1999, people told him there was no way he would be without a log truck or could stay away from the wood business. Sure enough two weeks later the 1967 Ford T952 entered his life. That truck was with him working six days a week for the Amish until he had to retire in March of 2017 because of ALS. People will always remember him with his outgoing personality and smile.

On October 26, 1974, Carl was united in marriage to Norene Sachs. Carl, Norene and their sons, Dustin and Dallas spent many weekends camping and fishing. He enjoyed old cars and attended many antique car shows and truck shows with his boys. He taught his sons a great work and business ethic.

Carl is survived by his wife of 43 years, Norene; two sons: Dustin (Lori) Thorne of Withee and Dallas Thorne of Owen; two granddaughters: Cheyenne Uptagraw and Sierra Thorne both of Withee. He is further survived by his mother, Jeanette Thorne of Owen; his sister, Phyllis (Dennis) Wilson of Owen; Nieces, Aunts and Uncles, other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his father, Floyd in 1974.
