Buhl, Cornelia M. (Bakos) (20 FEB 1917 - 1 JUL 2018)

Cornelia M. Buhl, age 101, passed away surrounded by her family on Sunday, July 1, 2018 at Colonial Center in Colby under the tender care of Ministry Home Care Hospice.

In accordance to Cornelia’s wishes a private celebration of life will be held.

Cornelia Marie Bakos was born in Trenton, NJ on February 20, 1917 the fourth of eight children. Her father died when she was young, and she spent her first 14 years between the farms in New Jersey and her aunt’s apartments in New York City. At 14 years of age she left school to work in the Horseman Doll Factory in Trenton. Eventually she went to New York, where her aunts taught her dressmaking skills. Her first dressmaking job was for Bergdorf Goodman in New York.

She married Frederick Buhl and moved to Newark, NJ where they had three daughters. In her early 30s, she was a widow with three young children. To make ends meet Cornelia took in dressmaking for wealthy women. As her children got older she worked full time in exclusive women’s dress shops in Newark, New Brunswick and Millburn, NJ. The family moved to New Brunswick, NJ in 1958. After her daughters had grown and left home, she moved back to Trenton where most of her family still lived.

Cornelia was always doing something, knitting, crocheting, making soft dolls and clothes for her family. When she wasn’t creating or reading (she was an avid reader), she was taking buses or local trains just to see where they went. She rarely looked back, she was always interested in the future and in space travel.

After the death of her brothers she moved to Fairfax, VA in 2003. In 2008 she moved to Spencer, WI, where a daughter, son-in-law, grandsons and great-grandchildren lived. Although she spent the last 2 ½ years in a nursing home, she was till feisty and curious till the end.

Cornelia is survived by her three daughters: Evelyn Buhl of Spencer, Margaret (William) Dickinson of Spencer and Barbara Higgins of Boonton, NJ; her grandchildren: William (Ann) Dickinson of Appleton, Chris (Angie) Dickinson of Stratford, Bonnie Tomlinson of Silver Springs, MD and Lori (Mike) D’Agostino of Andover, NJ and her eight great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, parents and her siblings Margaret Bakos, Charles Bakos, Al Bakos, Evelyn Gilleo, Edwin Jacob and Joseph Jacob.

Her arrangements are under the care of Life Tributes Funeral Home – Spencer.
