Loyal American Legion is honoring Daniel Roe this week. Daniel was born in 1948 and grew up in Spencer, Ohio. He graduated in 1966 from Black River Ohio High School. In 1966, he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps. (At that time the recruiters encouraged men to enlist advising them if they enlisted they could choose what jobs they wanted. It wasn’t until the men enlisted that they were told they would be tested and if they failed, they would be sent to the infantry division).

Daniel was sent to Parris Island, South Carolina for a 13-week boot camp. After that, he was sent to Camp Lejeune, North Carolina for infantry training for two months. When asked, Daniel said that ALL MARINES get infantry trained. Daniel did pass that test and was then sent to Memphis, Tennessee for Naval Air Station training for three months, but before going had married his now wife, Patsy. He was trained how to be a jet engine mechanic. After Daniel’s training he was stationed at Cherry Point Marine Base, North Carolina. It was there that Daniel worked on C 130 air crafts. These air crafts were used to ship supplies and other large items all over the eastern part of the world. Daniel was stationed here for three years. After his three years, he left the Marines and went back to Toledo, Ohio and worked for Chrysler. In 1986, the family moved to Madison, WI and Daniel worked for Oscar Mayer. Daniel retired in 2010. In 2012, he and his wife, Patsy, who is the Loyal Methodist Pastor, moved to Loyal. They have two children, three grandchildren, and one great-grandchild. Daniel has been an active member of the Loyal American Legion for six years. He is a member of the Legion Honor Guard, the Legion Chaplain, and he also is the administrator of the Legion website.
