Abitz, Walter Herman Richard (25 JUL 1906 - 15 MAY 1999)

Walter R. Abitz, 92, of the Town of Browning, died Saturday, May 15, 1999, at his home. Funeral services were held Tuesday, May 18, at St. Andrew Ev. Lutheran Church in the Town of Goodrich with Rev. Carl J. Busse officiating.

Burial was held in Medford Evergreen Cemetery II. Pallbearers were Peter and Willard Faber, Lyle Dahl, Emil Paur, Rudy Lemke, and Ken Nowak.

Hemer Funeral Home in Medford assisted the family with the arrangements.

Walter R. Abitz was born July 25, 1906, in Germany to Gustav Friedrich and Henrietta Louise (Hess) Abitz. He came to the United States with his parents as a youngster and settled on a farm in the Town of Browning. He received his education in schools there. On February 20, 1954, he married Herta Kruger in the Town of Goodrich.

He was employed in the lumber camps and worked in the grain fields of the western states. He then farmed in the Town of Browning. While farming, he was also employed in road construction, carpentry and for Widmer Construction at various times. He retired in 1978 and enjoyed gardening, woods work and carpentry.

He was a member of St. Andrew Ev. Lutheran Church. He was also a member of the Gad Band in the 1930s and had played for dances held at Gad.

Survivors include his wife, Herta; a daughter, Ingrid (Donald) Purvis of the Town of Browning; and three grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; four sisters; and four brothers.
