Borek, Mike Jr. (2 APR 1929 – 17 DEC 2017)

Mike Borek Jr., age 88, of Lublin, passed away on Sunday, December 17, 2017, at Oakbrook Health & Rehab in Thorp. Funeral services will be held at 9 a.m. on Friday, December 22, 2017, at St. Mary's Polish National Catholic Church in Lublin. Rev. Marion Talaga will officiate and burial will follow in the parish cemetery, with Mike's grandchildren as pallbearers. Visitation will be held at the church on Thursday, December 21,2017, from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m., and again on Friday, from 8 a.m. until time of service.

Mike Borek Jr. was born on April 2, 1929, in the Town of Roosevelt, rural Lublin, to Michael Sr. and Mary (Milas) Borek. He was raised on the family farm and received his education at area schools. After completing his education, he bought a truck and hauled cattle for Oscar Meyer. He later moved to Chicago, where he worked at Westinghouse and as a busboy in his uncle's restaurant. Mike was united in marriage to Lucille R. Ruda on August 5, 1950, at St. Mary's Polish National Catholic Church, in Lublin. They farmed on his parent's farm until purchasing the neighboring farm in 1953. They farmed until selling the cattle and retiring in 1992. Mike resided on the farm until 2017.

He had many interests, but especially enjoyed playing the concertina, gardening, fishing, feeding the birds, mowing the lawn, hunting and polka dancing.

He was a member of St. Mary's Polish National Catholic Church and was a former member of The American Civil Defense Association.

Mike is survived by three children: Michael (Bernie) Borek of Hawkins, Ronald (Karen) Borek of Lublin, Bonnie (David) Gryga of Conrath; eight grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Lucille, on October 25, 2015; one daughter, Karen M. Borek, on February 4, 1953; and two sisters; Ann Wilson and Josephine O'Neil.

The family asks that memorials be given in Mike's name to the St. Mary's Polish National Catholic Church Cemetery Fund.
