Graves, Spencer E. (16 FEB 1878 – 22 MAY 1973)

Spencer E. Graves, 95, lifelong resident of the Village of Spencer, passed away at the Colonial Nursing Home in Colby on May 22, 1973.

Mr. Graves was born on February 16, 1878, in Spencer, where he received his education. He was the son of Solon D. and Louisa (Norton) Graves. For 40 years he operated the Graves Mercantile Store, retiring from business in 1943.

He was married to Edith A. Griffin at Spencer on November 20, 1901. Three Graves children survive. They are Kenneth D. Graves, Spencer, Donald E. Graves, Wauwatosa, Wisconsin, and Mrs. Ray (Lucile) Tack, Spencer. Also surviving are one brother, Vincent (Pat) Graves, Long Beach, California, and one sister, Mrs. Leslie (Lizzie) Moore, also of Long Beach, also eight grandchildren and twenty-five great-grandchildren.

In addition to being in business for 40 years, Mr. Graves served as village president, Board of Directors of the Spencer State Bank, Spencer School Board, was a member of the Marshfield VFW, Modern Woodman and Odd Fellows. He participated in the Puerto Rican Campaign from July 20, 1898 to September 6, 1898, and was a Spanish American War Veteran.

Funeral services were held Friday, May 25 at 1 p.m. at the Rux Funeral Home, with the Rev. Bervie Scott officiating. Burial was made in the West Spencer Cemetery. Military graveside services were conducted by the Mueller Hintz Post VFW 1866 of Marshfield. Flag Bearer was Andy Seidler and bugler was John Morzinski Jr.

Honorary pallbearers were Harold Walterback, A.E. Messert, Waldo Albert, Bill Jensen, Elmer Horn, Fred Schwieske, Ed Thuss.

Pallbearers were John Orgish, Fredrick Graves, Tom Loughead, James Sautner, Spencer Graves and Michael Graves.

Organist was Mrs. Darrell Roder, with Rev. and Mrs. Bervie Scott as vocalists.
