Carey, Eugene “Gene” Michael (1 DEC 1930 - 11 AUG 2017)

Eugene “Gene” Michael Carey 86, formerly of Wausau, died on August 11, 2017 after a short battle with Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML).

He was born December 1, 1930 to late Gertrude Carey (Eichman) and Delbert Carey in Beloit Wisconsin. He attended Brother Dutton Catholic School through 8th grade. Gene graduated from Beloit High School in 1948. In 1950 Gene enlisted in the U.S. Army and served in Korea until 1954 with an honorable discharge.

Gene then used the G.I. Bill to continue his education. He graduated from UW-Whitewater receiving his Bachelor’s Degree in teaching. He later attended University of North Dakota where he earned his Master’s Degree in Counseling. Gene’s career in education started in Savanna, Illinois, took him to Staples Minnesota and in 1966 he came to Wausau. He was the Director of Guidance at John Muir Middle School from 1966 until 1992 upon his retirement. On August 15, 1959, he married Patricia Ann Larson (May 1, 1935-Jan. 10, 2015) in Beloit, WI. Together they raised their family of three boys and one girl.

Gene loved spending time at his cabin on Jackson Lake, connected to Lake Namakagon in northern Wisconsin. He loved walleye and crappie fishing in the spring. Gene was an avid deer hunter. He was constantly observing deer and their habits. He bagged many a deer with bow and rifle over the years. Gene always had a sense of humor and carried it through to the end fighting his illness. He was good at telling stories about his adventures and always entertaining. Family and friends will miss him for his conversation, his steady demeanor and solid advice.

Survivors include his sons, Dennis (Ferlyn) of Wausau, Jim of San Diego and Tom of Necedah; his daughter, Kristin (William“Tibbs”) of Madeline Island WI; his younger sister, Joanne Nordmoe (Aunt Joanie) Love’s Park Ill. and many nieces and nephews.

Gene was also preceded in death by his wife Pat and sister Irene.

A memorial service will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Friday October 6, 2017 at Peterson/Kraemer Funeral Home, 1302 Sixth St., Wausau. Rev. James Schaefer will officiate. Family and friends may call from 1:00 p.m. until the time of the service at the funeral home.

In Lieu of flowers donations may be sent to Wisconsin Education Association or the American Cancer society.
