Panek, Peter (4 JUN 1909 – 11 OCT 1969)

Peter Panek, 60, well know Thorp (Clark Co., Wis.) area livestock dealer, was killed shortly before noon Saturday by a bull in a pasture a mile north of Withee while appraising some heifers.

The body was discovered late Saturday afternoon by neighbors of the farm where the animals were located.

County officials said Panek had left his home around 9 a.m. to look at some heifers owned by Ed Cizik of Withee, and it is believed he died shortly after entering the field.

A bull owned by Allen Niemi of the Withee area, had been in the pasture with the heifers. There were not witnesses to the accident.

Late Saturday afternoon, children of Marvin German, who live adjacent to the Cizik farm, noticed something lying in the field, and a short time later, George Walter, Withee, arrived and was asked to investigate. He summoned Owen Police Chief William Nelson, who called county officials.

Officials said Panek died of massive internal injuries and that he had been dead for several hours before being found. The body was taken to the Thorp Funeral Home.

Funeral services for Peter Panek were held at 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Bernard’s Catholic Church. The Rev. Francis Brockman, pastor, officiated, and burial was in the parish cemetery.

Mr. Panek was born June 4, 1909 at Thorp. He lived his entire life here and had been a cattle dealer most of his life.

Survivors include his wife, Lilly, a daughter, Theresa, at home; his mother, Mrs. Anna Panek, Owen; three brothers, Joseph and George Panek, both of Thorp; Frank Panek, Chicago, Ill.; and four sisters, Mrs. Mary Phillip and Mrs. Han (Marge) Oelberg, both of Chicago, Ill.; Mrs. Ralph (Toshia) Stuessor and Mrs. Mike (Katherine) Kryzanski, both of Thorp.
