Schmidt, Lawrence E. (20 MAR 1928 – 6 NOV 2016)

Lawrence E. Schmidt, age 88, of Colby, passed away on Sunday, November 6, 2016 at Ministry St. Joseph's Hospital in Marshfield. A Memorial Service will be held at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, November 9, 2016 at Maurina-Schilling Funeral Home in Colby. Pastor Teri Hanson will officiate. Family and friends are welcome from 3:00 p.m. until time of service Wednesday at the funeral home in Colby.

Lawrence was born on March 20, 1928, the son of Elmer and Ida (Kolls) Schmidt in Illinois. He was united in marriage to Martha Wiersma on January 30, 1949 in Alden, IL. In 1959, they purchased a dairy farm in the Town of Colby and sold it in 1976.

They moved into Colby and lived above the Rux-Lulloff Funeral Home and Furniture Store. He worked for the funeral home, drove milk truck for Welcome Dairy, drove school bus, worked at Midwest Trucking, owned Schmidty's Bar for one year in 1981 and tended bar for Town and Country and the VFW in Colby. Lawrence enjoyed playing fast pitch softball and pitched for many years and also umpired softball for many years.

Lawrence is survived by his wife of 67 years, Martha of Colby; eight children: John (Bev) of Mondovi, Peggy Erickson of Leander, TX, Susie (Peter) Jecevicus of Colby, Linda Geiger of Colby, Rocky (Bobbi) of Colby, Jeri (Bill) Schmidt of Abbotsford, Judy (Mark) Sebold of Colby and Carol (Dan) Beyer of Medford; 26 grandchildren, 29 great-grandchildren and one great-great-granddaughter. He is further survived by his brother, Joe (Janet) Schmidt of Casselberry, FL; many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Edward "Bud", his sister, Gertrude and a granddaughter, Amy.
