Clark County Press (New Owners - 1985)

Taking over the helm of The Clark County Press on April 1 will be new owners, according to Gary and Jane Slaats, present co-publishers of the community newspaper.

Purchasing the paper are Ron and Barbara Zachow, who are leaving their home in Maple Grove, Minnesota, for Neillsville.

The ownership transfer brings to an end 47 years of members of one family serving as publishers. In 1938, members of the Harvey family came to Neillsville and purchased the newspaper from the Ender family. New publisher was Wells Fox Harvey, who was aided by his sons. In 1952, his son, Robert Harvey became publisher. In 1977, Robert and Dorene Harvey’s daughter, and son-in-law, Jane and Garyt Slaats, purchased the newspaper after working for Robert for five years.

New Neighbors

The Zachow family have made their home in suburban Minneapolis for the past 14 years. Moving to Neillsville, along with Ron and Barb, are daughters, Kate 12 ½; Megan, almost 9; and Melanie, 7.

Ron comes with a wealth of newspaper, advertising sales experience. For the past 14 years, he has been employed as advertising sales manager for a suburban weekly newspaper.

Ron grew up in the Minneapolis area and is a graduate of Osseo (Minnesota) High School and from St. Cloud State University. He is a past president of the Maple Grove Lions Club and is a coach or his daughter’s basketball team. He also has been active in a variety of civic and church organizations. Hobbies and interests for Ron include golf, woodworking and cross-country skiing.

Barb a native of St. Cloud, also graduated from St. Cloud State with a degree in education. Before the family arrived, she worked for Northwestern Bell Telephone. For the past 12 years, she worked at home. Most recently, she was employed as a secretary-receptionist for a real estate firm in Minneapolis. Her interests include golf, crafts, sewing and reading.

The children include 12 ½-year-old Kate, who is a sixth grader, and is active in league play for basketball and softball. She enjoys babysitting and hopes to continue doing so in Neillsville. Almost-9 Megan is a third grader, and also enjoys basketball. Melanie, 7, and in second grade, enjoys dancing and videos. All of the girls enjoy playing the piano.

The Zachows spend time together cross-country skiing, traveling and biking.

TRANSFER OCCURS

Gary and Jane Slaats, soon-to-be past publishers of The Press, have been in Neillsville for the past 13 years. The first five years they were employed by Jane’s father in the newspaper’s ad sales, production and editorial areas. Eight years ago, when Bob Harvey reached retirement age, the Slaats couple purchased the newspaper.

Under Gary and Jane’s ownership, the newspaper has grown in both circulation and prestige. Journalistically, it is considered one of the best community newspapers in the state. Since Gary and Jane arrived at The Press, they have amassed over 30 state and national awards, covering the gamut of newspapering.

Gary and Jane, who make their home at 30 Huron St., have not announced their future employment plans. They did say that positions open to them would probably be outside the Neillsville area. The couple have been active in the Wisconsin Newspaper Association (WNA), as was Bob Harvey, who served as the group’s president. Jane was presently second vice president for WNA and was moving up the ladder to the presidency; the sale will end that move. Gary served as chairman of WNA’s legislative committee and also was a WNA representative on the Wisconsin Freedom Of Information Council.

Both the Slaats and Zachows have said that present staff of The Press will remain and assist in the orderly transfer of the business. Gary and Jane Slaats will also be associated with the newspaper for one month to assist the new owners.

In the mid 1970’s Bob was given an opportunity to buy a cab over semi-tractor and so his over the road trucking began. Many family sacrifices were made to provide this steady income. He retired from his many years of driving in 2009. Bob became involved with the city government of Abbotsford, being elected alderman. He had time then to fish at Miller Dam and have morning coffee with the guys.

Bob enjoyed car racing of all kinds, even entering his personal car, which he named Syncopation, in the drag races in Union Grove in his earlier years. His pride and joy was the old Carver boat he owned. He passed the keys to his son, Jeremy, and loved seeing and hearing stories of the boat being used.
