USS Catamount (FHTNC) – Lloyd D. Abel, Machinist's Mate Fireman, USN, son of Mr. and Mrs. Otto W. Abel of Greenwood (Clark Co., Wis.), was a member of the crew of the dock landing ship US Catamount, which this month donated 53 pints of blood to the University Hospital of Kobe, Japan, while serving with the U.S. Seventh Fleet in the Far East.

During a previous visit to Kobe in 1962, the Catamount's crew members donated blood to the same worthy cause. The blood bank at the hospital is considered to have some of the most modern facilities in the world.

While in the Far East, Catamount has visited ports in Japan, Hong Kong and the Philippines.

Jerry Meyer, a music student at the University of Wisconsin, Stevens Point, is a member of the university’s Symphonic Wind Ensemble, which gave a concert on campus Thursday night.

Meyer, who plays the tuba for the 52-member ensemble, is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Theodore P. Meyer of 204 E. Stanley Street, Thorp. He is a junior majoring in instrumental music education at UW-Stevens Point, and also is a member of the University Choir, Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia, MENC, and UW-Brass Choir.

Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence Rudnick of Route 2, Thorp are proud to announce the engagement of their daughter, Nancy Ann, to Russell Pogodzinski, son of Mr. and Mrs. Walter Pogodzinski of Thorp.

Nancy is a senior at Gilman High School. Russell is a 1972 graduate of Thorp High School, and is presently engaged in farming.

An August 7, 1976 wedding is being planned.

Each year since 1966 the Thorp High School faculty has selected a student to represent Thorp in applying for a Wisconsin State Telephone Foundation scholarship.

The Foundation was established by the Wisconsin State Telephone Association, which represents 115 utilities serving the state of Wisconsin.

Mark Osowski, son of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas R. Osowski, who reside in the Withee Township, has been selected to represent Thorp in applying for a foundation $1200 scholarship.

Mark is interested in electrical engineering and industrial electronics.

Mark is ranked in the top ten of the senior class of 88, has won awards in bookkeeping and business math, and has been active in Future Business Leaders of America, Spanish Club, Student Council and intramural basketball. He has also been a right-hand man to his parents on their 162 acre farming during his school years.

Mark will receive a check for $50.00 from the Thorp Telephone Company, a contributor to the Foundation, for being selected to represent Thorp High School.

Representatives from state high schools will compete for 7 awards of $1200 apiece. Thorp has had winners in 1966 and 1970.

William Graham, 28, son of Mr. and Mrs. Walter Graham of Boyd, was killed in a car accident, which burned completely in Taylor County on Sunday, April 11, 1976.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, April 14, 1976 at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Thorp, at two p.m., with Rev. Robert Olson officiating. Burial was made in East Thorp Cemetery.

Army Specialist Five Thomas J. Pancyrz, son of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Pancyrz, Route 12, Lublin, Wisconsin, was awarded a safe driving certificate March 30, 1975 while serving with the 4th Transportation Brigade in Mannheim, Germany.

Specialist Pancyrz received the award for driving military vehicles 60,000 miles with no accidents or traffic violations.

Specialist Pancyrz is a truck driver in the 68th Transportation Company, 28th Transportation Battalion of the brigade’s 37th Transportation Group. He entered the Army in June 1969.

News: Thorp – Bicentennial Balloon Found (19 Apr 1976)

Cindy, Billy and Greg Verkuilen found a Bicentennial Balloon along a fence behind their parent’s barn on the afternoon of April 19, 1976. They are the children of Mr. and Mrs. Marvin Verkuilen, Route 3, Thorp. A note attached to the balloon from Karen Lorenz, a student at the Cochrane-Fountain City School, says the balloon was released on April 15 as a school project. Mrs. Verkuilen estimated the balloon traveled about 70 miles before landing on their farm. Cochrane and Fountain City, Wisconsin are located along the Mississippi River in Buffalo County.

A note was attached to the balloon, which Mrs. Verkuilen sent back to the school children. In return she received a letter saying that 87 balloons were released and only four were returned: one from Augusta, one from Athens and two from the Thorp area.

After facing two days of the stiffest competition in Wisconsin, the Thorp Future Business Leaders of America came out on top in several categories. Two members gained state office, the Parliamentary team received a first, and the Thorp chapter received a fifth over-all.

On April 8 – 10, 1976, the Thorp FBLA participated in state competition at the Twenty-Third annual Wisconsin FBLA State Leadership Conference. Attending the conference were 1,200 members and advisers, representing 150 chapters. The Green Lake conference included leadership sessions, exhibits, a campaign rally, discussions, social activities, the election of State Officers, and competitive events relating to future success in business.

The highlight for Thorp was the election of two members to state office. Melanie Polnaszek was elected the State President of the FBLA. She will serve for President for the 1976-1977 school year, presiding over all state executive board meetings and the annual State Leadership Conference. She will also represent Wisconsin FBLA on the state and national levels.

Pam Haas gained the office of State Parliamentarian for the next years. As one versed in the rules of parliamentary procedure, she will serve at all business session of the Wisconsin FBLA. She will also represent Wisconsin.
