Clark County Sheriff’s Office (Promotions - 2024)

Dennis Becker (left) and Jeffery Gurney (middle) of the Clark County Sheriff’s Office were both promoted to the rank of corrections sergeants.

The Clark County Sheriff’s Office announced the promotions of Jeffery Gurney and Dennis Becker to the rank of corrections sergeants. In their new supervisory roles, leadership will dictate their actions and decisions.

“I sought promotion to continue to challenge myself in my career,” Gurney said. “I intend on doing everything I can to train my replacement. None of us will continue our career forever, whatever it may be. This style creates a highly trained and capable staff [and] can only help serve the Sheriff’s Office and the citizens of Clark County more effectively. I believe it's about working with me, not working for me.”

Gurney described what leaders in his career left a lasting impression on him.

“As a young man in a different career,” Gurney said, “I was given the opportunity to take the role of assistant foreman, which led to a Foreman position eventually, leading a group of peers all of whom were my elders, most of whom had more experience in the department.

“‘Cleaver’ taught me a tremendous amount, from organizational skills to how to conduct your
self in a leadership role and gain the respect of the people working with you. May he rest in peace.”

Gurney gave his hypothetical advice to a new corrections deputy seeking a leadership position later in their career.

“Never stop learning, growing and challenging yourself,” Gurney said. “Be curious, ask questions and listen to the answers.”

Becker has over nine years of service to the Sheriff’s Office, and felt it was time for a change.

“I believed it was time to take on the extra responsibility,” Becker said.

Becker described his style of leadership as “lead by example.”

Becker said his previous night sergeant had left a lasting impression on him for his consistency on many aspects of the job.

“Learn as much as you can, when you can,” Becker said. “You never know when the opportunity to grow will present itself.”

Robert “Bob” P. Gosse, age 76, of Abbotsford, passed away surrounded by his loving family on Friday, January 12, 2024, at the Colonial Center in Colby under the tender care of St. Croix Hospice.

Bob was born on April 8, 1947, the son of Melvin and Betty (Krueger) Gosse in Wausau. After graduating from Colby High School in 1965, he pursued a career in auto mechanics entering the apprenticeship program at Dale Chevrolet in Waukesha. Being his own boss worked well for him. After moving to Curtiss in 1970 and working for Radlinger Chevrolet in Dorchester, Bob purchased a filling station in Curtiss. From there, he expanded with a second station in Colby.

In the mid 1970’s , Bob was given an opportunity to buy a cab over semi tractor and so his over the road trucking began. Many family sacrifices were made to provide this steady income. He retired from his many years of driving in 2009. Bob became involved with the city government of Abbotsford being elected alderman. He had time then to fish at Miller Dam and have morning coffee with the guys.

Bob enjoyed car racing of all kinds, even entering his personal car, which he named Syncopation, in the drag races in Union Grove in his earlier years. His pride and joy was the old Carver boat he owned. He passed the keys to his son, Jeremy, and loved seeing and hearing stories of the boat being used.
