Herman, Gerald A. “Jerry” (10 March 1928 - 31 January 2016) With Flag

Gerald A. “Jerry” Herman, age 87, a longtime Janesville resident passed away Sunday, January 31, 2016, at his home. He had suffered from Parkinson’s disease and dementia.

He was born March 10, 1928, in Thorp, WI, the son of the late Charles and Gertrude (Bogumill) Herman, the eighth of nine children. He graduated from St. Bernard’s Catholic Grade School and Thorp High School, class of 1947. He served in the U. S. Army during the Korean War, spending 20 months overseas from September 1950 until 1952. He was united in marriage on December 27, 1950, to Rosemary P. Burns at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Rhinelander, WI. In 1960, he began his employment at Janesville Auto Transport Company (JATCO), retiring in 1990 after 30 years of service.

He was an active member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church for many years. He loved to bowl and he bowled in the Church league until his Parkinson’s disease left him unable to continue. He was an avid card player, enjoying poker and cribbage in particular.

He is survived by his wife of over 65 years, Rosemary; their daughter, Michelle Herman Galvan; their three sons: Jerry Paul “J.P.” (Miki) Herman, Jon (Pam) Herman, and Marty (Kristie) Herman; their nine grandchildren: Celeua, Ashley, and Rigel Herman, Reis Galvan, Courtney Crowe, Michael Herman, and Elizabeth (Kevin) Rynders, Jackson, and Swam Herman; their foster granddaughter, Julie (Brian) Mensching; their four great-grandchildren: Zacyre and Bella Crowe, Charley Mills, and Joshua Mensching; and his sister, Theresa Pease; and by many nieces, nephews, and friends.

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his son, Michael; two brother; and five sisters.

Funeral services with a Mass of Christian Burial were held Thursday, February 4, 2016 at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, 315 Cherry St., with Fr. Sanctus Ibe and Fr. David Timmerman co-officiating. Inurnment will take place in Mr. Olivet Cemetery. The Whicomb-Lynch Funeral Home and Cremation Services assisted his family.

God gives us special angels to help us in our journey home to Him.
