Dewhurst, George K. (28 FEB 1829 – 22 AUG 1918)

George K. Dewhurst was born in the state of Massachusetts Feb. 28, 1829, and died at the home of Samuel N. Dewhurst, his nephew, Aug. 22, 1918, aged eighty-nine years, five months and twenty-three days.

He came to Ohio with his parents when he was quite young and located with them in Carlisle township near the place where he died and where he made his principal home ever since, except a few years he spent in Wisconsin and a short time in his late residence in Elyria township.

He was a man of considerable business ability, a carpenter and builder by profession, and by tact and industry he succeeded in saving a goodly portion of his hard earnings.

Some time before his late affliction he made a charitable and liberal disposition of all his possessions. To the Elyria Old Ladies’ Home he bequeathed $5,000 and the remainder he divided among his relatives, thus putting his own house in order for his departure from this world.

As a citizen and neighbor, his life and deportment stands out before the minds of those who knew him to be that of a good, loyal and desirable citizen in the community where he has lived. During the last two years of his declining health, pain, and the infirmities which most always accompany old age, he was very patient and fully reconciled to his condition. Never complaining of his affliction no matter how severe.

His last battle has been fought, his last task finished and his spirit has gone back to God who gave it.

There survive him to mourn their loss one brother, one nephew, two nieces and many other relatives and friends.

The funeral service was conducted by Rev. J.T. Hoak at the residence of Samuel M. Dewhurst, and the remains interred in the Laporte Cemetery. – Elyria, Ohio, Evening Telegram
