Calhoun, Alva Eugene (2 APR 1888 – 2 JUL 1965)

Funeral services were conducted at the Hoeper and Kraut Funeral Home on Tuesday, July 6, for Alva Eugene Calhoun of Grand Rapids, Mich. In charge of the service was Rev. Paul Toper, with burial being made at Riverside Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Harry Hansen, Earl Jensen, Owen Melin, Carl Barfnecht and two grandsons.

Death came to the former resident of this community (Owen, Clark Co., Wis.) at his home on July 2, 1965, when he succumbed to a heart condition. He had attained the age of 77 years and 3 months.

Born April 2, 1888 at Westby, Wis., he received his education in the school system there. On Dec. 30, 1911 he and Lydia McDaniel were united in marriage at Viroqua, and for several years operated a restaurant at Alma Center, until moving to Owen. Here he was employed for some time by the Schroeder Dray Line and famed until their retirement in 1952. It was shortly after their retirement that he moved to his present home at Grand Rapids, Mich.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by three sons, Carroll Calhoun of Grand Rapids, Mich.; Owen Calhoun, Sparta, Mich.; and Max Calhoun, Libertyville, Ill.; and three daughters, Mrs. Frank (Virginia) Milewski, Milwaukee; Mrs. Richard (Beverly) White, Detroit, Mich.; and Mrs. Verle (Phyllis) Krogness, Bloomington, Minn., and 16 grandchildren.
