Washburn (7 October 1973)

Mr. and Mrs. William Rizner moved into their new home south of the fairgrounds last weekend. They sold their farm to a family from Bartlett, Il.

Mrs. Irving Stevens entertained the Cannonville Ladies Aid recently. Seven members and eight visitors were present. Visitors were: Mrs. William Tullis of Waukesha, Mrs. Louie Scholtz, Mrs. Al Mashin, Mrs. Donald Kalsow, Mrs. Harold Elmendorf, Mrs. Floyd Wall, Mrs. Frank Short and Mrs. Art Odell. Mrs. Ralph Short will be hostess at the next meeting, Wednesday, October 17, with dinner served at noon.

Mr. and Mrs. Michael Melvin returned home from their honeymoon trip through several eastern states Wednesday and moved into the home they rented from Mr. and Mrs. Edgar Spiegel, which is on the Clarence Reinart farm. Neighbors and friends had a charivari for them Satruday night and welcomed them into the neighborhood.

Mr. and Mrs. Ron ‘Buck’ Wren and family of West Bend spent a weekend with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Mortenson, and attended the Weirick-Moennig wedding.

Mr. and Mrs. Mickey Condron and family of Schaumburg, Il., spent Sunday and Monday with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Havlicek, Sr., and brothers and sister-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Donald Havlicek and Mr. and Mrs. Chuck Havlicek and families.

Mr. and Mrs. Sandy DeHart of Levis visited her sister-in-law, Mrs. Art Odell, Thursday. They moved into their new home at Terry, Il., this last weekend. They recently sold their farm. Mr. DeHart fractured his leg very badly around a year ago and has been unable to farm.

Mrs. Esther Martinek of Chippewa Falls, and Uncle Harry Shaffer of Jim Falls were recent visitors of Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Short. Mrs. Martinek was the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Charles Shaffer and was born on the farm in Cannonville area, which is now owned by William and Whitey Buddinger. Harry Shaffer lived with the Charles Shaffer family after their mother died and attended Cannonville School. The Shaffer family moved from there to the Chili area, later moving to Chippewa Falls. Charles and Harry Schaffer were nephews of the late Mr. and Mrs. John W. Shaffer, who built and owned the Shortville Store. This property is still owned by Mr. and Mrs. Ragnar Mortenson. They sold this store and built another store with a dance hall over the store, a mile east of this one on 73 - Pray Corner, which stood there for many years. It was struck by lightning and burned 56 or more years ago.

Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Kapfer, Mr. and Mrs. Lee Kapfer, Mrs. Margaret Heberl, Duane Schultz, and father, Guy Schultz and the Ed Timmler family of near Loyal met relatives from the southern part of the state recently at Baraboo City Park, where they had a Kapfer reunion. Others in attendance were from West Bend, Rockford, Il., Janesville, Wisconsin Rapids, Marshfield, Stoughton, Kewaskum, Madison and other areas.

Mr. and Mrs. William Havlicek of Riverside, Il., and sister, Mrs. Jean Smolik of Stickney, Il., spent from Tuesday until Friday with their brother and sister-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Havlicek, Sr.

Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Short called Thursday evening at the Claude Kyle home.

Mr. and Mrs. Herman Dahnert and kent Lonning were supper guests Monday of Mr. and Mrs. John Reinart. Mr. and Mrs. Dale Reinart were evening guests also in honor of the birthday of Judy, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Reinart.

Mr and Mrs. Elmer Kapfer and Mrs. Neil Meddaugh attended the American Association of Retired Persons (AARP) meeting in Neillsville Friday night.

Mr. and Mrs. George Reinart and family of Tomah were guests Sunday of Mr. and Mrs. John Reinart. George also called at the Ralph Short home.
