The wedding of Miss Shirley Lee Byerly of Charlotte, N.C., daughter of Mr. and
Mrs. W. Frank Sims of Lake City, S.C., and Neill Harris Behrens of Charlotte,
son of Mrs. Agnes Behrens of Greenwood (Clark Co.), Wis., and the late Alex
Behrens, took place in a ceremony of beauty on Saturday, July 21, 1951 at 8:00
o’clock at Lake City Methodist Church at Lake City. Rev. Lloyd De Foix Bolt
officiated.
The vows were spoken before a background of palms and lace ferns and tiers of
cathedral tapers in seven-branched candelabra. Centering the background was an
oblong arrangement of calla lilies, white snapdragons and white stock.
Mrs. Annie Mae Askins, organist, and Mrs. Heyward King, vocalist, presented a
program of wedding music. Mrs. Askins played “Song to An Evening Star”, Wagner,
“I Love Thee”, Greig, and “Thine Alone:, Herbert. Mrs. King sang “Because,”
”Through the Years” by Youmans, and “O Perfect Love”, as the benediction. The
wedding march from “Lohengrin” by Wagner was used as the processional, and
“Meditation” from Thais”, Massenet, was used during the ceremony. The wedding
march from “A Midsummer Night’s Dream”, was as a recessional.
W. Frank Sims, step-father of the bride, gave her in marriage. Phillip S.
Gravely of Charlotte was best man. Ushers were Douglas Bowers, Raymond Casner,
Hazel Craig, J.S. Grimes, III, all of Charlotte, and Joseph B. Rowland of Lake
City.
The bride wore a Pandora wedding gown of white satin and Venice lace. The fitted
lace bodice was fashioned with an Empire collar and long sleeves ending in
points over the writs. A full lace overskirt extended from teh bodice over the
long train. Her full length veil of bridal illusion was worn with a pleated
capot finished with seed pearls at each side. She carried a white prayer book
topped with a white orchid and showered with white satin streamers tied with
stephanotis.
Miss Betty Jean Byerly of Lake City, sister of the bride, was maid of honor. She
wore a strapless gown of shrimp nylon tulle over taffeta fashioned with fitted
bodice and full skirt. She also wore a satin portrait stole which extended into
wide satin panels caught at the waist and contour bells. She carried a heart
shaped lacelon bouquet of rubrum lilies with white pompons and ribbon.
Mrs. Leo de Sola of Rockford, Ill., sister of the bride, was matron of honor,
and bridesmaids were Mrs. Murray Rhodes of Morganton, and Miss betty L. Masters,
Mrs. Philip S. Gravely, and Miss Candace Hatsell, all of Charlotte. Their
dresses and bouquets were identical to those of the maid of honor.
The mother of the bride wore a dress of turquoise blue chiffon and Chantilly
lace studded with rhinetones and a purple orchid shoulder bouquet.
A receptionw as held at the home of the bride’s parents, 503 East Main Street,
Lake City, after the ceremony. The home was decorated with arrangements of white
gladioli. During the evening Miss Harriet Sue Godwin, pianist, presented a
program of music. Assisting at the reception were Mrs. Elizabeth Gravely, Mrs.
Queen Ann Sims, Mrs. J.W. Floyd, Mrs. A. Wimberly, and Mrs. W.E. Brown.
Later the couple left for a wedding trip and after July 29 will be at home at
1958 Crescent Av.
Mrs. Behrens is the eldest daughter of Mrs. W. Frank Sims of Lake City, S.C.,
and the late Claude F. Byerly of Asheville. She attended Asheville..(the rest of
