Humke, Lelah Pearl (19 April 1896 - 17 January 1973)

Mrs. George Humke, 76, Greenwood, died at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Marshfield January 17. The former Lelah Pearl Sheets was born April 19, 1896, in Lima, O., to Alonzo F. and Ida (Davis) Sheets. She came to Greenwood with her parents when she was four years old. She graduated from Greenwood High School with the class of 1913 and taught school before her marriage to George Humke on November 8, 1916, in Immanuel United Church of Christ. They celebrated their golden wedding November 5, 1966.

The Humke’s farmed on the Humke homestead in the Town of Warner until they retired in 1964 and moved into the city of Green wood. Mrs. Humke was a member of Immanuel United Church of Christ and its Women’s Guild.

Survivors are her husband; three daughters, Mrs. Delmar (Ruth) Toburen of Greenwood, Mrs. Robert (Verona) Jackson of Sparta and Mrs. Glenn (Jeanette) Horn of Thorp; four sons, George, Jr., of Sterling, Ill., Irvin and Paul of Greenwood and Harvey of Green Bay; 19 grandchildren’ seven great-grandchildren; and a sister, Mrs. Evangeline Diaz of Enid, Okla.

Funeral services were held Saturday afternoon from Immanuel United Church of Christ. The Rev. Pacifico Camarin officiated and burial was made in the West Side Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Ary Arneson, Walter Schwarze, Walter Decker, Arno Miller, Norman Liebzeit and Everett Humke.

The Immanuel church choir sang, “Beyond the Sunset” and Just as I Am” accompanied on the organ by Mrs. Alvin Albert.
