Stuttgen, Lawrence (? - 16 July 1972)

A Colby man, Lawrence Stuttgen, 26, was killed Sunday at 8:15 p.m. in a collision between the motorcycle he was driving and a pickup truck. The accident occurred on the Marathon County side of Highway 13 on the south side of Abbotsford.

Stuttgen, traveling north, hit the right side of a truck driven by Daniel Parker of Owen. Parker, traveling south, made a left-hand turn across the path of Stuttgen’s motorcycle.

Two doctors from Marshfield were in the area and aided the injured Stuttgen. He was taken by ambulance to a hospital in Marshfield where he was reported dead on arrival.

Police authorities have charged Parker with failure to yield the right-of-way. The motorcycle was a total loss. The truck received $300 damage.

Stuttgen, Lawrence (14 Apr 1944 – 16 Jul 1972)

A rural Colby man became the 13th traffic fatality on Marathon County roads this year when he was killed on Highway 13 in Abbotsford at 8:15 p.m. Sunday.

He is Lawrence Peter Stuttgen, 28, son of Mr. and Mrs. Nicholas Stuttgen, Route 2, Colby.

According to Abbotsford-Colby Police Chief Albert Podevels, Stuttgen died of head injuries and numerous fracture enroute to St. Joseph’s Hospital in Marshfield.

Stuttgen was killed when the northbound motorcycle he was operating was struck by a southbound pickup truck driven by Daniel H. Parker, 16, Owen.

Parker, who was attempting a left turn into the North Star station on Abbotsford’s south side at the time of the accident, is being charged with failing to yield while turning left.

Stuttgen’s motorcycle, valued by Podevels at $1,000 was a total wreck, while Parker’s 1972 pickup truck sustained $350 damage to the right front end.

Funeral services for Stuttgen were held Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Colby, with the Rev. Francis Rushman officiating. Burial was in St. Mary’s Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Ronald Hackel, James Flink, Richard Meyer, Ronald Cook, Jim Weber and Mark Kaiser.

A general rosary was held at the Lulloff Funeral Home Tuesday at 8:15 p.m., followed by a rosary by the Catholic Order of Foresters, of which Stuttgen was a member.

He was born in Chippewa Falls April 14, 1944 and came to the town of Colby with his parents in 1953. He attended Colby schools, worked in Janesville for five years, served one year in Vietnam and since his discharge, has worked in the Colby area.

Besides the Foresters, he was a member of St. Mary’s Parish and the Colby Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Stuttgen, who was single, is survived by his parents, twelve brothers and four sisters. They include Mrs. Clifford (Patricia) Wentzel, Spencer; Mrs. Edward (Carol) Williams, Janesville; Delores, Milwaukee; Sister Kathleen, St. Rose Convent, La Crosse; and the following brothers, Donald, Eau Claire; Bernard, Thorp; Raymond, Janesville; Anthony, Melvin, James William, Thomas, Dale and Robert, all at home; Charles, Athens, and John Capuchin Brother, Huntington, Indiana.

He is also survived by his grandmother, Mrs. Theresa Stuttgen, Stanley.
