Wasserberger, John (8 APR 1859 – 30 JUL 1916)

On Sunday morning John Wasserberger died at his home on West Street after an illness of several months’ duration. He was born near West Bend on April 8, 1859, to Mr. and Mrs. Gerhardt Wasserberger and his early years were spent on a farm. Later he engaged in the logging business and spent seventeen winters in the woods engaged in that business. He came to Neillsville in 1886 and engaged in the saloon business until his illness made active work impossible. He was united in marriage to Miss Ida Hoffman, a dAughter of Mr. and Mrs. Herman Hoffman, of Globe. They were married on Feb. 10, 1896, and three children were born to them. Mr. Wasserberger became suddenly sick last February and was taken to the hospital at Marshfield where he underwent three operations at different times. He came home on his birthday in April and it was hoped that he would eventually recover, but after much suffering, he passed away on Sunday, cancer of the liver being the cause of his death.

Mr. Wasserberger was a man who was held in the very highest esteem in all circles in this city, for he was a man of high integrity and morality and he lived his life in adapting himself to local conditions so that all who knew him became his sincere friends. He was an excellent husband and father and a fine neighbor and his death is universally regretted. He is survived by his wife and three children, Harry, Lillian and George. Also by five brothers and one sister, Charles and Henry of Neillsville; Richard of Minocqua; Herman of Marshfield; Jacob of Montrose, Neb.; Mrs. Kate Zimmerman of St. Helens, Neb. One sister, Mary Fessen, preceded him in death.

The funeral was held Tuesday afternoon, services being conducted by Rev. Longenecker at the Congregational Church and interment being made in the Neillsville Cemetery.
