Smoke, Catherine P. (18 September 1930 - 4 October 2013)

Catherine P. Smoke, 83, of Black River Falls died Friday, Oct. 4, 2013, in her home in the Town of Brockway, Jackson County, the same day as her sister, Ruby L. Garvin, 93, died at Family Heritage Care Center.

Catherine was born Sept. 18, 1930, in Arpin to Peter G. and Lucy (Greengrass) Pettibone. She attended school through the eighth grade in Neillsville and was then raised in Black River Falls. She married Edwin Smoke and he preceded her in death in 1986.

Catherine sold baskets and worked seasonally at Habelman’s Cranberry Marsh doing picking and sorting. She did housekeeping g for a short time in the Twin Cities and did day care in her home. She enjoyed taking care of children, making baskets, rummaging, going shopping and spending time with her grandchildren and Bible study.

Surviving are her four daughters, Pamela Riddle, Caralee Murphy and Sheila and Phyllis Smoke, all of Black River Falls; one son, Harry Funmaker, Eau Claire; one sister, Ruby Pettibone Garvin, (who died the same day), of Black River Falls; one brother, Leslie (Sandy) Pettibone, Portage; her longtime companion, Milton Funmaker, Black River Falls; 16 grandchildren, and several great-grandchildren and her very, special pet dog “Pinky”.

In addition to her husband, Edwin, she was preceded in death by three brothers, Russell, Virgil, and Gavin Pettibone, and three sisters, Annie Lone Tree, Edith Thundercloud and Genevieve Pettibone.

Traditional services were conducted by Richard Mann at noon Sunday, Oct. 6, 2013, from Catherine’s home at 128 Sheridan Street, Black River Falls. Burial was made in Decorah Cemetery in the Town of Komensky, Jackson County.

Pallbearers were Latsiklanunha Hill, Rob McKee and Henry and Murt Greengrass.
