Varney, Carrie Belle (20 JUN 1873 – 24 APR 1947)

Carrie Belle Van Arsdale, daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Garrett Van Arsdale, was born at Saxeville, June 20, 1873, received her education there and resided at Saxeville until she was 18 years old.

She then lived in South Dakota until her marriage there in 1893 to Alba Forrest Varney, who preceded her in death Dec. 28, 1924. After her marriage she lived at Greenwood and came to Marshfield in April 1916.

Mrs. Varney, a Gold Star mother was a past president of the Marshfield Auxiliary to the American Legion was a former officer of the Methodist Ladies Aid Society, had been a chaplain of the Auxiliary to the United Commercial Travelers and a member of the Royal Neighbors of America, besides being an O.E.S. member.

Mrs. Varney had been an active Red Cross worker during World Wars I and II.

Mrs. Varney passed away at St. Joseph’s Hospital at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, April 24, 1947 where she had been a patient for the past four weeks.

Funeral services were conducted at the First Methodist Church, Marshfield at 2 p.m. on Monday, April 28, Rev. Arthur R. Oates of the Presbyterian Church officiated and she was laid to rest in the Hillside Cemetery.

Surviving are five children: Col. L dale Varney, Washington, D.C.; H. L. Varney, Rockford, Ill. D.N. Varney, Stevens Point; Mrs. Albert F. (Mildred) Riebe Jr., Minocqua; and Irvin J. Varney, Marshfield. Another son Everett L. Varney was killed in action in France, Oct. 19, 1918. There are eight grandchildren.
