Schoengarth, Edward H. (Responding to Accusation – 6 Jul 1916)

I have just learned that it has been rumored that I made some remark against the United States flag a day prior to the Company leaving for Camp Douglas. I wish to state that the only possible source for such a rumor was a conversation relating wholly to the fighting factions of Mexicans who serve no one flag and on account of their hostile feeling do not unite under one flag. Anyone in passing who heard only part of the conversation should not construe it to have referred to the flag of the United States, as it did not refer at all to the American flag. As to our own flag, I wish to say that I have the same feeling for it that every patriotic true citizen of the United States should have. I have drilled under it faithfully in Co. “A” here for over five years and when my last service expired I received an honorable discharge and was a non-commissioned officer. During my enlistment I was subject to the Government’s call to defend its honor at any moment and my feeling and respect for the stars and stripes is the same still, and I am always ready to defend it.
