Hess, Mr. and Mrs. John (Gold - 28 FEB 1949)

50th Wedding Anniversary

Mr. and Mrs. John Hess, whose marriage took place Feb. 28, 1899, at Deerfield, and who have lived in this vicinity since 1900, observed their golden wedding anniversary Monday by receiving callers at their home in the village during the afternoon and by entertaining several guests at a 7:30 o’clock diner at which Mrs. A. C. Elliot and Mrs. Andrew Peterson assisted the hostess.

Others present were Mr. and Mrs. Henry Ploog of Marshfield, Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Picus and Robert Graham.

Later in the evening about 30 former neighbors from South of the village arrived to extend felicitations, and to play sheephead. Favors for high scores were awarded to Mrs. Victor Fischer and Arthur Baehm; for second high to Mrs. Richard Koch and Victor Fischer and to Mrs. Fred Stargardt as traveling prize.

Following cards Mr. and Mrs. Hess were serenaded, several appropriate songs being included in the program. Money and other gifts were presented to the honored couple. To complete the celebration Mr. and Mrs. Hess will entertain the Gay Nineties Club at their home Saturday evening.

Coming to Spencer in November, 1900, with a team of horses and wagon and two dogs, Mr. and Mrs. Hess located on a farm northwest of the village and shortly afterward moved to their farm south of town. About 1920 they built their present home in the village.

Mr. Hess who is now in the trucking business, previously operated an oil station and tourist cabins, and prior to that had a livery stable. Mrs. Hess is the former Emma Lamp.
