Four members of the Abbotsford FFA Chapter place third in the Clark County Land Judging contest at Neillsville on July 1, 1977. Members taking part were Jeff Venzke, Bill Johnson, Greg Lueth and Gary Beran.

Eight schools from Clark County took part in the contest, with Greenwood placing first and Spencer coming in second. High individual in the contest from Abbotsford was Venzke.

Becker, Geri M. (25 Jun 1977)

Geri M. Becker, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Wilbur Becker, Colby, and Reed A. Romens, son of Mr. and Mrs. Woodrow Romens, Wautoma, were united in marriage Saturday, June 25, 1977. The Rev. James Stauber performed the 1:30 p.m. ceremony at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Colby.

A reception, dinner and dance followed at Dorchester Memorial Hall.

A sheer organza white gown trimmed with Venice lace was worn by the bride. The gown was styled with a high neckline and ruffled flounced skirt, ending in a chapel length train. Venice lace edged the fingertip length bridal veil. She carried yellow roses, stephanotis and baby’s breath.

Jody Krueger, friend of the bride, was maid of honor. Cathy Schwieso and Peggy Becker, sisters of the bride, were attendants. They wore floor length gowns of yellow plaid organza and carried baskets of yellow daisies and baby’s breath.

Acting as best man was Steve Waldhart, friend of the bridegroom. Norbert Romens and David Romens, brothers of the bridegroom, were groomsmen. Ushers were John Becker and Ron Romens.

Mrs. Romens, a graduate of Colby High School, is an accounting clerk at Figi’s in Marshfield. Romens is a carpenter at Counterform, Marshfield.

St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Marathon, was the setting for the 4 p.m. wedding of Carol Heil, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Heil, Route 1, Marathon, and Brian Weix, son of Mr. and Mrs. Leo Weix, Abbotsford.

Sharon Stankowski, Wausau, was her sister’s matron of honor. Grace Gumy, Athens, and Shelly Ringle, Marathon, were the bridesmaids. Cynthia Weix, sister of the bridegroom, was the flower girl.

Alan LaRoque, Dorchester, was the best man. Groomsmen were Daniel Schillinger, Edgar, and Dave and Scott Heil, Marathon, brother of the bride. Frank Heil, Marathon, and Peter Weix, Abbotsford, brothers of the couple were the ushers.

The dinner was served at Wausau Holiday Inn and the reception and dance were held at Poplar Tree Ballroom.

The couple will live in Browns Mills, N.J. The bride is a graduate of Marathon High School, and the groom is a graduate of Abbotsford High School. He is serving in the U.S. Air Force, stationed at McGuire AFB, New Jersey.

Mr. and Mrs. Joe Hainzlsperger, Colby, announce the engagement and forthcoming wedding of their daughter, Fay Hainzlsperger, to Jeff Kockler, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Kockler, Libertyville, Illinois.

Miss Hainzlsperger is a 1973 graduate of Colby High School, and a recent graduate from Viterbo College, with a Bachelor of Science degree in nursing. She is presently employed at the Colonial House of Colby. Her fiancé graduated from Libertyville High School in 1973, and is a recent graduate from Lake County College, with a degree in Police Science. He is employed at Condelle Hospital as a security card in Libertyville.

Wedding date has been set for August 29, 1977.

During the CB break held at Dorchester Memorial Hall Saturday, an area man won the trophy for having the longest belt. LBJ (Lyle Johnson, Curtiss) said the competition was big, but he won. Others in the contest were Red Demon (Bud Kerby, Illinois), Bullet (Ron Anderson, Withee), Black Jack (Jack Thompson, Fall Creek) and Handle with Care (Dave Strebig, Medford.

The twin sons of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Goessl were baptized Saturday evening, July 9, 1977 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Colby, with the Rev. Rushman officiating. The twins’ grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. Orland Goessl, Wautoma, and Mrs. Fred Knuth, Stetsonville, and great-grandmother, Mrs. Irving Goessl, Curtiss.

A baptismal dinner was held Sunday at the home of their grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Orlando Goessl, Stetsonville. Schumacher, Nick (5 Aug 1897 – 7 Jul 1977)

Funeral services for Nick Schumacher, 79, Dorchester, were held at 10:30 a.m. at St. Louis Catholic Church, with the Rev. James Schaefer officiating. Burial was in Sacred Heart Cemetery at Stetsonville. Pallbearers were Douglas Schumacher, Kerry Schumacher, Daniel Pinter, Wayne Underwood, Warren Underwood, and Joseph Zirngibl. Kraut-Maurina Funeral Home at Dorchester was in charge.

Mr. Schumacher had been in ill health for the past five years, and had been hospitalized the past month. He died at 7:20 a.m. Thursday, July 7, 1977 at Memorial Hospital in Medford.

Mr. Schumacher was born August 5, 1897, at Appleton. He was married on June 25, 1919 at Dorchester to Hattie Ludwig.

He moved to the Town of Mayville in 1903, and after their marriage they operated a cheese factory in the Town of Little Black. In 1922, they went to Blenker, where they operated a cheese factory until 1927, and came back and farmed in Mayville until 1957, when they moved into the village. He worked for Neal Smith, Inc. until 1963, and later was employed part time by the Pinter Packing Plant at Dorchester.

He was a member of St. Louis Catholic Church and of the Dorchester Senior Citizens. He is survived by his widow, two sons, Donald Schumacher, Eau Claire, Norbert Schumacher, Marathon; three daughters, Mrs. Orman Underwood (Lorraine), Dorchester, Mrs. John (Janet) Pinter, Mrs. Joe Zirngibl (Celine), Stetsonville; one brother, Peter Schumacher, Dorchester; four sisters: Mrs. Louis (Ann) Ludwig, Stetsonville, Sister Celine Schumacher, La Crosse, Mrs. Archie (Genevieve) Leichtnam, Plymouth, Mrs. Wilbur (Margaret) Becker, Colby; 27 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one son and one daughter.

M. Sgt. James L. Nipko of Rural Route 1, Unity, has graduated from the Air Force Communications Service Non-commission Officer Academy at Richards-Gebaur AFB, Missouri.

The sergeant, who received advanced military leadership and management training, is a minuteman non-commission officer code controller at Whitman AFB, Missouri.

Sgt. Nipko is a 1954 graduate of Colby High School.
