Halvorsen, Helen E.  (11 April 1908 – 12 January 2009)

Helen E. “Evie” Halvorsen, 100, of Black River Falls died Monday, Jan. 12, 2009, in the Pine View Care Center in Black River Falls where she had resided since Jan. of 2000.

Helen was born April 11, 1908, in the Town of Irving, Jackson County, to Frank and Essie (Welch) O’Brien. She was raised in Black River Falls.

She married Edward W. Gardner in 1929. The couple was later divorced.

She married Martin O. Halvorsen in 1938. The couple lived in Milwaukee until moving to Black River Falls in 1970. Martin preceded his wife in death June 22, 1973.

Helen worked in the Milwaukee Post Office. She and her husband, Martin, operated a rooming house while they lived in Milwaukee. Evie loved to dance and do craft work. She was a past member of the Black River Falls Evangelical Lutheran Church.

She is survived by her daughter-in-law, Ellen Gardner, Alma Center, numerous nieces and nephews, and many grandchildren and great grandchildren.

In addition to her husband, Martin, she was preceded in death by her son, Edward Gardner; a daughter, Helen Mae; and three brothers, Edward, Hugh and Archie O’Brien.

Memorial funeral services for Helen E. “Evie” Halvorsen were held at 11 a.m. Monday, Jan. 19, 1009, at Torgerson’s Funeral Home (715-284-4321), Black River Falls. Pastor Eric Bakken officiated, and burial was in the Riverside Cemetery in Black River Falls. Relatives and friends called at Torgerson’s Funeral Home Monday from 10 a.m. until the time of services.
