Valiga, Betty Evelyn (18 Sept. 1924 - 17 Jan. 2006)

Betty Evelyn Valiga, age 81, of Solberg Lake in rural Phillips, died unexpectedly from complications of asthma on January 17, 2006. She was born on September 18, 1924 in Marshfield and graduated from Marshfield High School in 1942. She then earned her teaching certificate at Stevens Point Teachers College. She went on to teach math at Phillips High School from 1946 to 1949 and Freedom High School from 1963 to 1983.

Betty is survived by sons Michael (Donna) of Iowa, City, Iowa, Richard (Linda) of Waukesha, Robert (Laurie) of Knoxville, Tenn., and James (Dorothy) of Highland. She is also survived by grandchildren Dan (Shannon) of Minneapolis, Minn., Jason, Jeff and Tracy Valiga, and by brothers, James (Barbara) Furstenberg and Edward Furstenberg of Madison and sister Ruth Pohlod of Phillips.

Betty was preceded in death by her husband John Paul Valiga; parents, Edward and Christine (Arens) Furstenberg and a sister, Emily (Perce) Patterson of Marshfield, and granddaughter Saleena Hood of Alexandria, Vir. A funeral service will be held on Sat. Jan. 28 at 1:30 p.m. at St. Therese of Lesieux Catholic Church in Phillips.

Interment will be in the spring in St. Patrick’s Cemetery in Phillips. A Memorial Scholarship has been established for the Phillips High School in lieu of flowers. The Heindl Funeral Home of Phillips is handling funeral arrangements.
