Smith, Donald D. (20 Sept. 1931 - 2 Apr. 2009)

MEDFORD -- Donald "Don" D. Smith, 77, of Medford died April 2, 2009, at his residence.

A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Hemer Funeral Home, Medford. Cremainal inurnment will take place in Medford Evergreen II Cemetery, where full military honors will be performed by the Medford Area Military Honors Team.

Visitation will be held Saturday at the funeral home from 10 a.m. until time of services. Donald was born Sept. 20, 1931, in La Crosse, the son of Leslie W. and Florence H. (Irvine) Smith. He was united in marriage Sept. 3, 1954, to Le M. Sacia in Minot, N.D. She preceded him in death Oct. 22, 2000.

After high school, he joined the U.S. Army, where he served in the Korean War. He was a teacher and coach in Balfour, N.D., from 1960-1964. They then moved to Hollandale, where he taught and coached for two years. In 1967, they moved to Arcadia, where he also taught and coached until 1979, when they moved to Medford.

The couple owned and operated the R-Bar for three years. They also operated the Riverhouse Inn for five years, then operated The Place in Medford until his retirement in 1994. In his retirement, he did substitute teaching for local schools.

He is survived by three sons, Bob (Karen) Smith of Galesville, Brad (Dawn) Smith of Rib Lake and Lonnie (Sue) Smith of Medford; 12 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren; two sisters, Beverly (Wendell) Schaan of Minot, N.D., and Mary (Toby) Tobias of Hastings, Minn.
