Fried, Rachel Hammel (1865 - 9 FEB 1888)

Mrs. Rachel Hammel Fried, wife of Louis Fried, and eldest daughter of Jacob Hammel, died at the residence of her father, this morning at 10 o'clock, aged 22 years.

Death, never a welcome visitor, has seldom come in apparently more untimely fashion, than to the home which less than two years ago, echoed to the mirth of wedding festivities and congratulations. Young, loving, and beloved, as daughter, sister and wife, the life of Mrs. Fried seemed stretching toward a future bright and promising when suddenly the inexorable shadow fell across her pathway, hiding her forever from mortal sight.

Her death was caused by membranous croup, one of the rarest and most fatal of diseases, and peculiar to infantile life, a case like this, occurring in an adult being often unknown to the observation of physicians of wide clinical experience.

Mrs. Fried's intense suffering and heroic struggle for life can never be forgotten by the devoted relations and friends who have stood by night and day, at her bedside. The warmest sympathy of our citizens goes out to the circle so grievously afflicted. (Appleton Crescent)
