Esselman, Phyllis (1900 - 1983)

Mrs. Joseph (Phyllis) Esselman, 83, of Route 2, Loyal, Clark County, died Tuesday evening, Aug. 2, 1983, at her home.

Funeral services were at 11 a.m., Friday, Aug 5, 1983, at St. Anthony's Catholic Church, Loyal. Officiating was Rev. James Logan.

Interment was in the parish cemetery, with Edgar Verhalen, Hugo Stutte, James Becker, Harold Collinson, Alfred Rondorf, George Rietz, Vernon Rogstad and Mike Weyer serving as pallbearers.

The Parish Council of Catholic Women had a rosary service at 3:15 p.m., a prayer service was conducted at 8 p.m., and a Knights of Columbus rosary at 8:30 p.m., Thursday.

Phyllis Altemus was born in Strong City, Kan. To Charles and Esther (nee Robb) Altemus on March 9, 1900. She attended elementary school there before moving with her parents to Evansville, where she continued her grade school education. In 1914, she moved with her parents to Neillsville, where she graduated in 1917 from Neillsville High school.

On June 12, 1923, she and Joseph Esselman were married at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Neillsville. They observed their golden wedding anniversary on June 17, 1973.

The farmed in the Town of Loyal until retiring in 1966, but continued to live on the farm.

She was a member of St. Anthony's Catholic Church, the Parish Council of Catholic Women and the West Loyal Homemakers Club.

She is survived by one daughter, Mrs. James (Mary Ann) Beaver of Loyal four sons, Charles of Oshkosh, Clemens, Richard and Lawrence, all of Loyal 24 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

Preceding her in death were her husband, Joseph, on Oct. 19, 1982 her parents two grandchildren and one sister.

Rinka Funeral Home, Loyal, was in charge of arrangements.
