James Freeman Sparks was born July 23, 1818 in Summit, New York to Thomas and Mary (Howe) Sparks.  He was the fourth child and first son of their twelve children.  He married Sylvia Calkins on August 20, 1837.  She was was nearly five years older than her husband and was born September 5, 1813 at Liberty, Sullivan Co., New York.

The couple moved to Plainfield, Wisconsin in 1869.  "Grandma Sylvia" died there, January 23, 1871.  Afterward, James lived with various members of his family for the remaining thirty-one years of his life and spent much of that time in Nevins, Sherwood, Clark Co., Wisconsin because most of his children were living there.  He died Jun 1, 1902 and was buried in the Sherwood Cemetery, Clark County, Wisconsin.
