Holub, Joseph & Frieda

In 1914, Joseph and Frieda Holub and their four children, Vladimir (Ladd), Joe Jr., George and Ervin, moved to the 160 acre farm of Andrew Michalski, in the town of Levis (Clark Co., Wis.), which they purchased.

 

Eddie was born there, Oct. 14, 1919, and I, (Lillian) was born on Sept. 19., 1924.

 

All the children lived in the surrounding area.  Ladd was born May 2, 1906, in Chicago.  Ladd married Kathryn Meier in 1928.  They had one daughter, Lorraine.  In December of 1946, Kathryn was killed in a car accident at the age of 37.  Ladd passed away in June of 1954, age 48.  Their daughter, Lorraine, married Stanley Smagacz of City Point.  They had two children, Lori Kay, born Feb. 28, 1957 and James Ladd, born May 18, 1960.  They lived in Wis. Rapids.

 

Stan Died of Cancer in 1966 and Lorraine died of Cancer in 1970.

 

Joe Jr. was born in Chicago, Dec. 4, 1908.  He married Mildred Honzik in May of 1930.  They had nine children, Dolores, Ellen, Shirley, Ronald, Leonard, Ilene, Loretta, Barbara and Kathy.  Joe passed away in October 1969.  He lived in Alma Center at that time.

 

George was born in Imly, S.D., October 29, 1910.  He married Lillian Matousek on June 1, 1936.  George farmed, hauled milk, went on the road construction and then went into the tavern business, until he retired in 1980.  He lives in Greenwood, Wis.  They had no children.

 

Ervin was born May 24, 1913, at Thompsonville, Michigan.  He married Elsie Marek of Hatfield on Aug. 12, 1939.  They had one son, Harold, born May 16, 1941.  Ervin farmed and was road grader for the Town of Levis and then worked for the  Farmers Union Do-op until he retired.  Elsie worked for Winnebago Children’s Home for 8 years and is now working for Nelson Filter plant.  Their son, Harold, married Arlene Meyer of Eau Claire.  He is a plumber and is working for Medicke Plumbing.  They have no children.

 

Eddie was born in Levis, Oct. 14, 1919.  On Dec. 1, 1945, he married hazel Fitzmaurice of Humbird.  They had one son, Michael, born Ja. 16, 1944.  He married Sharie Vagjrt of Chippewa Falls.  They have two children, Michael Jr., born Jan. 5, 1964 and Michelle, born Dec. 17, 1966.  Mike works at Memorial Hospital in the Maintenance Department and as Ambulance Driver.  Sharie works at Memorial Hospital in Respiratory Therapy.  Ed and Hazel also had two foster children, Terry and Donald of Waterloo, Iowa.  Terry and Jeannie have one son, E.J., and two twin daughters, Sara and Katy.  Donny and Leticia have one daughter, Theresa.

 

Ed farmed the home farm when our father retired in 1945.  He worked on road construction and later worked as an orderly at Memorial Hospital.  He’s now working in the Maintenance Department, the last two years.  In 1973, they sold the home farm and bought a lot on the Black River and built their home.  It is in the Town of Dewhurst, and Ed is on the Town Board.

 

Lillian married Fred McCarty of Sinton, Texas, April 16, 1943.  Fred was in the Armed Forces, stationed at Camp McCoy.  In October 1943, he was sent to Ireland and then to the European War.  He was in the Belgium Bulge, ending up in Germany, until the end of the War.  He spent a total of 5 years in the service.  He came home June 30, 1945.  We had two daughters, Mary Ann, born March 30, 1944.  On Sept. 1, 1962 she married James J. Gall of Neillsville.  Scott Allan was born August 23, 1963.  They had a daughter, Gina Marie, born July 16, 1970.

 

After Mary Ann graduated from high school, she went to work for the Clark County Press, then worked for the County School Supervisor, Mrs. Elsie Halle.  She drove Kindergarten bus, worked for Russell’s Hardware 11 years, and for the last five years has been working for the Black River Country Shopper.  Jim has worked for Ford Motor Co. since he got out of the Armed Forces, working first at Zupanc Motors, Loyal, then Svetlik Motors, Neillsville, which is now Harry Kirch Ford Motor Co., where he is still working.

 

Darlene was born Nov. 21, 1948.  She married Darell Telega of Duluth, Minn.  They are living in West Allis, Wis.  Darlene is a beautician and Darell is an Insurance Salesman.  They have two children, Michael, born Jan. 10, 1970 and Brian, born Sept. 28, 1972.

 

I worked at the Auton Test, Wiedenhoeft for five years and operated a tavern 18 years.  Then both Fred and I worked at Badger Ordinance, Baraboo, Wis., after we sold the tavern in 1966.  Fred retired in 1973 and I am working at Sunburst Youth Home, as a House Parent, for the past four years. 

 

When Lorraine died, I was left Guardian of her two children, Lori Kay, 13, and Jimmy, 10, but they lived with Jim and Mary Ann, to be raised Catholic.  Lori Kay is married to Jim Johnson of Hixton, a cheese maker and farmer.  She worked at the Abstract Office and Courthouse in Black River Falls, until last summer, when their son, James Travis, was born, June 17, 1980.

 

Jim graduated form high school, went to Eau Claire Tech School.  He started working at the Forestry Department last spring.  He married Jean Tibbett, Oct. 4, 1980.  She worked at Camp McCoy last summer and is currently unemployed.  They are living in Neillsville.

 

Our father, Joe, died Oct. 4, 1948, age 74, Frieda, our mother, who had lived with us until she died March 7, 1969, at the age of 83.

 

Ervin &  Elsie, Harold & Arlen, Mike and Sharie, Jim and Mary Ann, Fred and I, still reside in the Town of Levis.
