Edwin White & Catharine (Shanklan) Oens

Edwin Oens was an honored Civil War Veteran who resided in Granton, Clark County, Wisconsin.  He was born in Marion County, Indiana May 18, 1843, moving to Richland Center, Wis., when a boy.  His parents were William B. Oens born in 1805 in Kentucky and Rachel (unknown) Oens born 1802 in Kentucky.

At the age of 18, he joined the Union Army in 1861 and served four years and one month as a private in Co. D, 11th WI Infantry.   He was mustered out with an honorable discharge on the 8th day of November. He was married to Catharine Shanklan of Richland Center, Wisconsin.  She was born November 26th, 1846.

During his early married life he followed the occupation of farming. He married Catherine Shanklin on November 5, 1865 in Richland Center, Richland Co., Wisconsin. Catherine was born November 26, 1846 in Indiana and died 25 March 1932 in Granton, Wisconsin.  Eleven children were born to this union, three dying in infancy and one girl at the age of twenty. In about 1905 he moved to Chili, living a quiet retried life for five years, when he purchased a farm in Washburn which he sold a year ago and moved to Granton, where he lived the remainder of his life. He died Oct. 15, 1924 in Granton and he was laid to rest in the Yolo Cemetery, Fremont Township, Clark Co., WI.  He lived to be 81 years and 5 months.  March 25, 1932, his faithful wife, Catharine, was buried at his side.

Family Notes

It is noted on some of the papers that Edwin’s name is listed as "Owens". In places where Edwin signed his name, he signed "Oens". I only knew the spelling of "Oens" being used by the family. I was fortunate to know well Edwin’s daughter, Ada Adora who was my great-grandmother. She passed away at the age of 89 when I was an adult. I also knew well a son of Edwin’s, Fred Garfield.

I am a Oens descendant and am interested in this posting. Frank and Pearl Oens were great-great aunt and uncle of mine.  Can you help?  Shirley srandall39@centurytel.net
