Sorensen, Axel #2 (6 JUL 1884 - 4 JUL 1961)

Funeral services for Axel Sorensen were held at 2:00 o’clock Thursday afternoon from the Nazareth Lutheran Church at Withee. The final rites were read by Rev. Byrl Knudsen with burial in the parish cemetery. Serving as pallbearers were Arnold Rasmussen, Sam Andersen, Peter Christophersen, Alfred Frost, Emil H. Hansen and Christ Frost. Carrying the floral offerings were Mesdames Alfred Frost, Christ Frost, Emil Hansen, Arnold Rasmussen, Pete Christophersen and Miss Helga Andersen.

Mr. Sorensen had been active and in apparent good health up to a week previous to his death. He was stricken while on a fishing trip Tuesday, June 27, by what was determined to be a blood clot in the upper portion of his legs. Treatment was first administered at the hospital in Stanley. The next day he was transferred to Marshfield and as his condition worsened was taken to Wis. General Hospital at Madison, where he passed away at 8:30 a.m. July 4th, 1961.

Axel Sorensen was a prominent personality in Withee (Clark Co., Wis.), as well as throughout the county. He had been a resident of the Withee area since 1900 when he went to that community with his parents. He was born July 6, 1884 at Superior, Wis.. When the family first settled at Withee, the farmed north of the village until 1928, at which time they purchased a fine farm in the Frenchtown area, which he farmed until 1945.

In late years he served as a sales representative for a large fertilizer company in addition to being active in politics, having been a candidate for the office of assemblyman on the Democratic ticket in 1954; he had served as chairman of the Clark County Democrats; commander of the American Legion; as a school board member and as vice chairman of the P.M.A.

The deceased, who just missed by two days observing his 67th birthday, was born on July 6, 1894. On June 23, 1920 was united in marriage to his wife, the former Ann Madsen, in a ceremony performed at Withee, who mourned his sudden passing. Other mourners are a son George, Withee; two daughters, Mrs. Einer (Alice) Anderson, Mauston, and Emily Sorensen, Sturdevant; two brothers, Sigurd, Withee and Ernest LaGrange, Ill.; four sisters, Mrs. Nels (Betty) Nielsen, Mrs. K. (Thyra) Hansen and (Dagne) Almind, all of Minneapolis, Minn., and Mrs. E. Ellen Hansen, Marine of St. Croix, Minn., and seven grand children.
