Harry M. Shewczyk, age 96, of Gilman, passed away on Wednesday, May 16, 2012, at the Clark County Health Care Center, Owen. Harry was born April 4, 1916, in Lublin, the son of Steven & Katherine (Niec) Shewczyk. He grew up in Lublin and attended area rural schools. On June 4, 1939, he was united in marriage to Magdalene Komanec in Lublin at Holy Assumption Orthodox Church. The couple resided in Lublin for three years with Harry being a bar owner. They then moved to the Gilman area where Harry was a dairy farmer and an electrician.

Being a very active member in the community, Harry served on the parish council for SS Peter & Paul Catholic Church, Gilman, was a member of the Catholic Order of Foresters, and volunteered many hours for church activities. He was also a member of the Gilman Lions Club, a co-founder of the Gilman Credit Union and a member of the Gilman Community Betterment Association.

In his younger years, he was an avid archer and helped to establish the Chequamegon Bow Hunters Club. Loving the outdoors, Harry also fished, hunted and golfed. He took pride in gardening and working in the yard, roses being his favorite flowers.

He had a wonderful sense of humor and made many people smile. He loved his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren dearly. He was a loving, caring husband, father and grandfather.

Harry is survived by his wife Magdalene “Mitzie” of Gilman, and his children: Betty Metz of Appleton, Nancy (Larry) Dietzler of Salt Lake City, UT, Dave (Barb) Shewczyk of Lublin, and Dennis Shewczyk of Gilman; 10 grandchildren: Tammy Henrichs, Tina Dahl, Mike and Marc Metz, Torie Walters, Kristin Dietzler, Any, Derek, Barry & Larisa Shewczyk; 13 great-grandchildren; Taryn, Alan, Morgan, Trevor, Emily, Elizabeth, Hannah, Sophie, Madison, Sydney, Piper, Yohann & Keaby; two sisters: Helen Ziemba of Stanley and Stella Gomulka of Lublin; and nieces and nephews and other relatives.

He was preceded in death by his parents; six sisters: Julia Rusnak, Ann Schumann, Eva Lindbergh, Olga Munson, Pauline Lencz and Rosie Krawchuk; and one brother, Nick Shewczyk.

The funeral mass was held on Tuesday, May 22, 2012, at 10:30 a.m. at SS Peter & Paul Catholic Church, Gilman, with Fr. John Long officiating. Burial followed in the Meadowbrook Cemetery. Friends and family called on Monay evening from 4-8 p.m. at the Gilman Funeral Home with a 7:30 vigil service and again on Tuesday at the church from 9:30 a.m. until the time of services. Pallbearers were grandsons Mike and Marc Metz and Derek and Barry Shewczyk, nephew Steve Lencz, and Rodney Dahl.

Our family wishes to express their sincere appreciation to the kind and courteous staff at the Clark County Health Care Center.
