Louis & Sarah Rofinot/Rufinot

Greenwood, Eaton, Clark, Wisconsin

Louis (aka Rufus) was born 1841 in NY to Eugene & Nancy Rofinot, natives of France. He enlisted as a Pvt. with Co. K, 4th Wis. Cav., 24 Apr 1861. He was discharged 2 July 1864, but enlisted in Co. E, 22nd Wis. Inf., serving from 22 Feb 1865 to 24 Jun 1865. He and Sarah Good were married 5 Dec 1866 in Gravesville, Calumet Co., WI, and had three sons before moving to Marquette, Marquette Co., MI, where their youngest son was born. Sarah was a native of Ontario, Canada, born of Irish parents, who came to WI about 1856. Their sons were: Henry (b. 1869), Louis (b. 1875, d. 1900 in MN), Nelson (b. 21 Apr 1879, d. 22 Aug 1946 in WA) and Eugene (b. 25 May 1883, d. 23 Apr 1932 in OR). The family returned to WI, settling in Eaton, Clark Co., before 1885.  Louis died while at work in the old Farming mill near the family home, 13 Feb 1888, when an emery wheel burst.  Sarah Rofinot was only 54 yrs old when she collapsed and died, 9 Aug 1900. When her 15 yr. old son, Eugene, went to contact his brothers, he found a telegraph had come from Duluth, MN authorities, informing them that his brother Louis was dead there. Another brother, Nelson, had been with Louis the previous winter, but, his address not being known, he was unaware of either the death of his brother or his mother, leaving Eugene to bear the double affliction alone. Both Louis and his wife, Sarah, are buried in the Greenwood, WI City Cemetery.

CHAPTER IV - Picturesque Characters-Eventful Happenings - A Narrative

Miller Brothers owned a mill on Gile Creek where they sawed lumber several years 'but when a dam was to be built at Hatfield they moved the machinery there. Ed Miller, father of Harry J. Miller, looked after the saws, belting, etc., as he was the mill-wright, and while cleaning the boiler, was badly scalded. He was brought to his home north of Greenwood but lived only a short time. This same mill was later moved back to Eaton Center where lumber was sawed, and in 1887 an emery wheel, used for filing saws, burst, a piece striking Lou Rufinot in the chest, killing him. Ben Hyslip also was killed in this mill, being wound upon a shaft when his clothing became caught. Then in 1891 George McConnell Sr., working there, was killed. The water in the boiler got low and when the fireman noticed it, he grabbed a bucket of water and threw it into the firebox which caused an explosion, killing Mr. McConnell instantly. The mill was never repaired and later the ruins burned.

            'TIS DOUBLY SAD

MRS. SARAH RUFINOT DEAD--HER SON LOUIS DIED SUNDAY.

A STROKE OF PARALYSIS TUESDAY EVENING FROM WHICH DEATH RESULTED WEDNESDAY AFTERNOON--WORD RECEIVED WEDNESDAY OF THE DEATH OF LOUIS RUFINOT IN DULUTH, MINN.

The community has been called to mourn an unusually sad affair in the death of Mrs. Sarah Rufinot at her home about four miles south of town. Tuesday evening Eugene, her only son at home, a young lad about fifteen years old, had been up town and on returning home about eight o'clock found his mother prostrate on the ground suffering with what proved to be a stroke of paralysis. Dr. B. P. Churchill was at once summoned and did all that could have been done for relief. She continued unconscious, though having rallied enough to answer a question or two, until four o'clock Wednesday afternoon when death came to her relief.

A sad feature of the case is that Wednesday morning when Eugene came up town to try to telegraph for his brother, Nelson Rufinot, from whom they had not heard since last March, found a letter here from authorities in Duluth informing them that another brother, Louis, who was also with Nelson last winter, was dead there. The condition of his mother made it seem best to have Louis buried there. Thus, the mother never learned of the death of her son. The address of Nelson not being known, he is not aware of either the death of his brother or mother, leaving Eugene to bear this double affliction alone at least for the present. Neighbors and friends are doing everything possible, however, to look after all funeral arrangements, Jas. Syth being in charge. The entire community shares with the bereaved son in his moment of sorrow and he will find in his neighbors more than sympathy.

The funeral will be held from the M. E. church today (Friday) at 10 o'clock and Rev. G. C. Andrews will preach the sermon. The interment will take place in the Greenwood cemetery beside the body of her husband who was killed a few years ago by the bursting of an emery wheel in the old Farming mill near the family home.

Deceased was born fifty-four years ago last April in lower Canada, but has spent most of her life in Wisconsin. She was the mother of several children, only two of whom now survive. Her friends and acquaintances speak of her as a kind neighbor and thoroughly good woman.
