Sidney Brown

Weston Twp., Clark Co., WI

Sidney was born in St. Lawrence County, N.Y., 2 Jul 1835, the son of Benjamin and Lucy Brown.  He married Lydia Harlow, 2 Oct 1857 and shortly before the Civil War, they moved to Brown Co., Wis. where Sidney enlisted as a private in the 3rd Wis. Cavalry.  He served gallantly through the war and was mustered out as a Quarter Master Sergeant. On his return he tackled the task of clearing a new farm near Wrightstown, Brown County and lived there until 1876 before moving to Cloud Co., Kansas, to homestead a farm.  In 1881 they moved to Clark Co. to farm, two miles east of the Christie post office. Later this place was sold and he moved to another Christie farm where he lived until his death.

His wife died is also buried in the Christie Cemetery. To them have been born six children. One little boy, Clarence, died before they left New York. The others are Sarah Chase of Mulino, Ore.; Alta Chase of Salem, Ore.; Elmer and Albia Brown; both residing in Portland and Lillian Sischo in Salem.  25 May 1896, Sidney married Maria Simmons of Kaukauna, Wis.  She was born 2 Oct 1837 and was the daughter of James and Martha (Skeesuck) Simons.  Sidney Brown was a type of strong and forceful man. As camp foreman in the lumber woods, as a pioneer on the forest farm or western prairie, as a soldier in the field, as a leader in local political affairs, as a citizen and neighbor he helped to build the commonwealth, in the same manner that his skilled hands helped frame many of the buildings around the county, strong and substantial.  He became one of the most prominent and respected citizens of the area.  He died March 1, 1912 and is buried in the Weston Chapel Hill Cemetery.
