Jack Louis Stevens

Greenwood, Clark Co., Wisconsin

Jack was born 10 Oct 1837 in Barton, VT, the 2nd son in a family of 14 children.  In 1847, he moved west with his parents, Samuel and Fanny M., to settle in Janesville, WI.  At the breaking of the Civil War, he was in IL and was one of the first responders to Abraham Lincoln’s call for soldiers.  He served with Co. F & E, 9th Ill. Inf. until the 2nd battle of Corinth, when he was shot through the left thigh.  He then returned to Janesville, where he remained until his wound healed and he could rejoin.  This term of his service lasted until the end of the war and was spent with the 12th Wis. Btry. from 17 Aug 1864 to 7 Jun 1865.  After his discharge, Jack went to St. Joe, Missouri, to join an overland caravan, and drove 6 mules to Salt Lake City, UT, with a load of merchandise. There were many encounters with Indians during this expedition, and a few of his companions were taken.  From Salt Lake City, he went on to CA, where he remained until 1888 when he returned to Janesville, WI.  The next year, he moved to Greenwood, WI, and made his home with his brother, Perry M. "Peter" Stevens, who was the proprietor of the Commercial House Hotel.  The family of Rudolph Hummel (another veteran featured in this book) lived next door to them.  For 16 years "Old Jack" was a janitor at the school.  In 1906, because of failing health, he was taken to the National Soldiers Home in Milwaukee.  He died there, Tuesday, 6 Dec 1910, at the round old age of 73 years, and services were conducted by his remaining comrades.  His body was taken to his old home by his brother, Charles, to be buried in Oak Hill Cemetery, Janesville, where his body now lies.  His surviving siblings were John, Lorinda (Mrs. E. S. Williams), Calista (Mrs. Kelsey), Perry, and Charles.

Peter/Perry M. Stevens, Brother of Jack, was the proprietor of the Commercial House Hotel

Cemetery Records

Jack Louis Stevens was buried in location 18-3-9 of the Oak Hill Cemetery in Janesville, Wisconsin.  His grave has a Civil War marker for Co. E, 9th IL Inf.  He died at the Milwaukee Veteran's Home and his remains were later shipped to Janesville.   [Military Home Records].  Buried in the same cemetery are his father, Samuel (1811-5 Apr 1874) who died in Lafayette, WI; his mother, Fanny M. (1816-4 Oct 1881-burial date) and Noble D. Stevens (1858-14 Sep-1881-burial date).

Jack Louis Stevens was born Oct. 10, 1836 in St. Lawrence County, N.Y. He was the second son of a family of five children. In the year 1847, he came west with his parents and settled at Janesville, Wis., where his body now lies, having died Tuesday, Dec. 6, 1910 at the National Soldiers Home in Milwaukee, at the round old age of 74 years.

At the breaking of the Civil War he was in Illinois and was one of the first volunteers to respond to the call of Abraham Lincoln. He served in the 9th Illinois infantry until the second battle of Corinth, when he was shot through the left thigh. After his disablement he returned to his old home at Janesville, where he remained until his wound was healed, when he re-enlisted in the 12th Wisconsin Battery, and served until the end of the war.

After the war in 1865, he went to St. Joe, Mo., and joined an overland caravan and drove six mules to Salt Lake City, Utah, with a load of merchandise. On this expedition many encounters were had with Indians in which a few companions were taken.

From Salt Lake City, deceased went on to California, where he remained until 1888, when he returned to Janesville, Wis. A year later he came to Greenwood, Clark County, where he made his home with his brother, P.M. Stevens, until 1906, when he was taken to the National Soldiers Home in Milwaukee.

For sixteen years he was janitor at the school building, and never was there one who met with such favor and had the good will of the children, as did Old Jack.

Funeral services were conducted at the Home by his remaining comrades, after which the body was taken to his old home by his brother, Chas.

The news of his death came last week as a shock, barbed with pain and sorrow. Today all that was mortal of our friend and townsman is at peaceful rest in the silent city.

Stevens, Peter M. (16 MAY 1851 - 26 FEB 1915)

The people of this city (Greenwood, Clark County, Wis.) were shocked on Thursday evening to learn of the death of P.M. Stevens, a resident of this city the past forty years and a pioneer of Greenwood, having come here when only a few inhabitants comprised the place with a few homes and business places.

Peter, as he was generally known, had many fast and true friends that had learned to know him well though his generous and kindly disposition toward all. He had always taken an active part in things that were of interest in his home town and with his energy behind progressive movements, and his timely suggestions, it was sure to be a success.

Two years ago deceased suffered a paralytic stroke and since that time his health had been failing gradually until his death. He was born the 12th child of a family of fourteen children at Janesville, Wis., May 16, 1851. His boyhood days were spent there, during which time he learned the trade of harness maker. When nineteen years of age he came to Neillsville, Wis. and went into business for himself. There he was married in 1871 to Josephine Gibbons, whose death occurred a year later. He was married on May 12, 1875 to Anna Fossum, and that summer came to Greenwood and went into the harness business and had continue in it ever since.

Peter Stevens harness was known over this district as the kin of quality, and no work was ever done that was not up to the best.

Deceased was nearly sixty-four years of age. He was an active member of the M.W. A. and E.F.U. loges and had charge of the M.W.A. hall for several years.

Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at the home at two o’clock and at the hall at 2:30 o’clock. Members of the lodges to which he belonged attended in a body and friends to the extent that the hall was filled, Rev. W.S. Willmarth conducted the service, which was followed by ritualistic work by the Modern Woodmen.

The music by the choir composed of Mrs. E.F. Wollenberg, Miss Lelah Sheets, A.J. Campbell, Bart Osborne and Mrs. C. M. Hunt as organist, was most beautiful.

The Greenwood Band played two dirges, one as the cortege entered and one as they departed for the last resting place in the silent city.

The floral tributes were large and beautiful from friends of deceased, especially from the older residents of Greenwood.

Those who were here from out of town to attend the funeral were Mr. O.J. Fossum and son Oscar of Chippewa Falls, Mrs. C.A. Kelsey and C.D. Stevens of Janesville, Mr. and Mrs. Ray Stevens of Chicago and Mr. and Mrs. R.M. Benethum of Freeport, Ill.

Deceased leaves to mourn his departure to a better world, a wife, son and daughter, two brothers, C.D. Stevens of Janesville and John D. Stevens of Waupaca.
