Cowles, Lawrence V. (1904 - 1982)


Lawrence Cowles, 77, 5248 Forest Circle S., Stevens Point, died unexpectedly of an apparent heart attack, Saturday evening, June 5, 1982, at St. Michael's Hospital. He had been hospitalized since April 22, and had been home for one week.

Funeral services were conducted at 11 a.m., Wednesday, June 9, at St. Stanislaus Catholic Church, Stevens Point. Rev. Dennis Lynch officiated and interment was in St. Anthony's Catholic Cemetery, Loyal. The Fourth Degree, Knights of Columbus conducted graveside services.

Lawrence Cowles was born Sept. 26, 1904, to Mr. and Mrs. Edward M. Cowles in Dodge County. He came to Loyal, Clark County in 1925 and worked in the shop of the Loyal Tribune to learn the business. On March 19, 1925, together with his father, he bought the Loyal Tribune. The interests of Edward M. Cowles were purchased in Jan. 1927 by J.R. Steiners, and the Cowles and Steiners families operated the newspaper and printing business for 26 years.

On March 11, 1937 he began writing a column known as "What's Seen and Heard." Items from his column were reprinted widely in daily newspapers and other publications.

The Tribune was sold to Lee Favreau, formerly of Milwaukee on Oct. 26, 1851. Mr. Cowles then started the Loyal School and Office Supply, which he sold in 1971 when he retired and moved to Stevens Point.

On Oct. 11, 1925, he was married to Loretta A. Bannach of Loyal.

He was a fourth degree knight of the Knights of Columbus and a charter member of the Loyal Rotary Club.

Surviving him are his wife two daughters, Mrs. LeRoy (Dolores) Behling of Stevens Point and Mrs. Fred (Mary) Hood of Lexington, Ky. And three grandchildren.

Preceding him in death were his parents, one son, two brothers and a sister.

Boston Funeral Home, Stevens Point, handled arrangements.
