JOHN VESEL


John Vesel, 95, Greenwood, died Tuesday, Dec. 1 at Neillsville Memorial Hospital. Services were held Saturday, Dec. 5 at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Greenwood. The Rev. Robert Streveler officiated, with burial in St. Mary's Cemetery. Pallbearers were grandsons, Tom Sowieja, Gene Sowieja, Bob Reichard, Mike Vesel, Stewart Vesel and Rick Brown.


He was born April 19, 1892 to Frank and Katerina (nee Frankovich) Vesel in Yugoslavia. He came to America in 1907 and worked in the copper mines in the Upper Peninsula. He was a watch maker until 1937. From 1937 until 1945 he owned and operated his own tavern. He had been residing in Greenwood since then.


In June 1920, he was married to Margaret Schuette in Calumet, Mich. She preceded him in death in 1966.


Survivors include three sons, Raymond, Sterling, Ill.; Robert, Greenwood; and Charles, Atlanta, Ga.; two daughters, Mrs. Gordon (Margaret) Brown, Bergland, Mich.; and Mrs. Gene (Josephine) Sowieja, Escondido, Calif.; one sister, Mrs. Anna Novak, Greenwood; 24 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren.


Preceding him in death, besides his wife, are his parents, two sons, John and Bernard, and several brothers and sisters.


Rinka Funeral Home handled the arrangements.
