SCALDED TO DEATH

One of the saddest accidents of the year in this vicinity happened Saturday noon, Dec. 22, 1906, at the home of Almon H. McCarty, six miles north of Greenwood, Clark County, the details of which are as follows:

The eldest daughter had just returned home from an errand, and during the moment the mother was engaged in the matter, Vernon, her three year old son, managed to elude her watchful eye and fell in a sitting position into a large pail of boiling hot water with which she was preparing to mop. With the aid of the child's grandfather, J. A. McCarty, who happened to be at the home, the clothing of the child was immediately removed, when it was found that the scald extended from the arms down to the knees, and was so severe that the skin peeled off with the clothing as it was removed.

Medical aid was at once summoned, the father, who was away at his work, sent for, and everything possible done for the child, but though there was hope for a time that the boy would recover, the flesh had been too tender to endure the cruel heat, and early Sunday morning the little one passed quietly away as if in sleep.

The funeral occurred Monday noon from the home, Rev. Rowe of Withee officiating and many friends of the bereaved parents attending. The remains were interred at the Greenwood Cemetery.
