JOSEPH MORLEY

Joseph Morley, one of the most prominent and widely known bankers in northern Wisconsin died at his home in Neillsville, Clark County last Thursday afternoon, Oct. 14, 1909. Wednesday night he retired as usual and on Thursday morning he complained as not feeling well and did not rise as early as usual. About eight o'clock he was found unconscious by his wife. Doctors were sent for and everything possible was done for him but to no avail and he died at four o'clock in the afternoon.

Joseph Morley was born March 1, 1854 in Oldham, England. His parents died when he was eleven years old. He came to America in May 1875 and to Neillsville in the spring of 1876. Here he accepted a position in the abstract office of Dewhurst and Hutchinson and was a careful and methodical clerk. He attended the University of Wisconsin and graduated from there in 1881, and coming back to Neillsville went into partnership with Jas. O'Neill practicing law. In 1882, he entered Jas. L. Gates bank as cashier, and when the Neillsville Bank was opened he became cashier of that bank and was with that institution until his death.

Mr. Morley was married in 1883, to Florence Clark of La Crosse, who with a son, Clark, and a daughter, Ruth, survive him. He leaves other relatives living in England.

The funeral was held Sunday at the house under the auspices of the Masons, burial taking place in the Neillsville Cemetery. He was a member of the Modern Woodmen which lodge attended in a body. The funeral was one of the most largely attended in Neillsville for some time and the many floral offerings showed the high esteem in which the deceased was held.

The pallbearers were W. J. Marsh, A. B. Marsh, Fred Karner, Gilbert Johnson, Aug. Snyder and J. F. Schuster. The honorary pallbearers were D. Dickinson, Thos. Lowe, H. A. North, W. S. Davis, W. L. Hemphill, and Carl Stange.

Mr. Morley was a most pleasant gentleman, having a kind word and cordial greeting for all. He possessed many fine qualities and the loss of an industrious and kindhearted citizen will be mourned by many.
