SHERMAN B. TUTTLE (June 6, 1816-August 25, 1892)

TUTTLE--At the residence of his son, F. M. Tuttle, in the town of Colby, Aug. 25th, of heart failure, S. B. Tuttle, in the 77th year of his age.

S. B. Tuttle was born in Utica, NY, June 6th. 1816. After having arrived at manhood's estate he moved to Ohio, in which state he was married to Miss Martha J. Brown, Feb. 21st, 1843. Three years later, with his wife, he removed to the town of Auburn, Fond du Lac county in this state, where he has made his home ever since.

Last spring Mr. Tuttle came to the town of Colby on a visit to his sons which was extended to this time. During his visit, not wishing to be idle, he had taken upon himself, among other light tasks, that of feeding the pigs. On Thursday evening, after eating his supper as usual, he went to the milk house and took a pail of swill which he carried to the pig pen and as he poured it into the trough he fell in a leaning positon against the wall of the pen. He was seen to fall and assistance rendered immediately but he had ceased to breathe. Death came instantly and we believe painlessly, which was but the carrying out of a wish he had often expressed, that when his time came he hoped he would not be called upon to suffer on a sick bed for weeks, but that his death might be quick and painless.

Besides the faithful wife, who has been his helpmeet for nearly fifty years, he leaves to mourn his sudden demise eleven children, seven sons and four daughters all of whom, with the exceptions of one daughter, Mrs. Thos. Shanks of Comet, Mont. were present at the funeral.

The funeral occurred at the M. E. Church and the remains were interred in Colby, cemetery. Rev. Thos. Biggar officiating. Besides Mrs. Martha Jane Brown Tuttle, wife of the deceased, the sons and daughters attending the funeral were as follows: H. W. Tuttle, Sheldon Tuttle, Elmer Tuttle and Mrs. J. Oderkirk, of New Castle. Geo. Tuttle, Mrs. E. Galligan and Mrs. F. Garland, of Antigo, F. M., S. B., and Eugene Tuttle, of the town of Colby.

It was a peaceful ending to the life of a good old man, whose work in this world was well done and the laborer called to an eternal rest.
