Snyder, August (1856 - 5 Feb 1915)

Friday this community was shocked to learn of the death of August Snyder which occurred that afternoon. Mr. Snyder had been sick with pneumonia for a couple weeks, but his condition had not been alarming and his friends had thought that he was getting along nicely. But a relapse came and he passed away suddenly.

Mr. Snyder was born on what is known as the Herrian farm south of Neillsville in 1856. He was raised here and attended school here and when a young man went to Chariton, Iowa, where he took a position as an express messenger. He followed this work for some time, but in 1902 returned to Neillsville and in 1903 bought the Gilbert Johnson clothing store and conducted it until a few months ago. He was united in marriage to Miss Estelle Selves on Sept. 218, 1886, and to this union six children were born, all of whom survive with their mother to mourn the loss of their father. The children are Ernest, Mrs. N.J. Scherer, Mrs. T.V. Carlton, Edna, Lucille and Charles. Deceased is also survived by one sister, Mrs. O.D. West, of Webster City, Iowa.

August was a genial, whole-souled man and one who maintained a host of sincere friends by his never-failing courtesy and true friendship. He was accommodating in his personal acquaintances and honest in his business dealings and the friendships he made during his years of residence here have been maintained because of the many sterling qualities which he possessed. He was a member of the three Neillsville Masonic orders, was an Odd Fellow, a Beaver and an E.F.U. The funeral was held Monday afternoon and was attended by the Masons and Odd Fellows in a body. A brief service was conducted at the house by Rev. Colman and the formal Masonic services were conducted at the Congregational Church.

Mr. and Mrs. T.V. Carlton of Reedsburg and Thomas Selves of Colby were here to attend the funeral.
