Perman, Victor (28 JAN 1926-`08 DEC 2011)

Memorial services were held on Sunday, Dec. 18, 2011, for Victor Perman, 85, Roseville, Minn., who died earlier this month.

Victor Perman was born Jan. 28, 1926, to Daniel and Julia Perman, and was raised as one of eight children on the family dairy farm near Greenwood. A 1943 graduate of Greenwood High School, he enlisted in the United States Navy in 1944 and served on the USS Pavlic, which saw duty in the Pacific Theatre. Using his GI bill to enroll in college at the University of Minnesota, he began pre-vet studies at the age of 24. He married Virginia Awe on June 10, 1950. He continued his education, earning his B.S. and DVM in 1955 while providing for his growing family od five daughters. He completed his PhD degree in 1962. A pioneer in the field of vet clinical pathology and a former president of the American Society of Veterinary Clinical Pathologists, Dr Perman received its lifetime achievement award in 2002. Recipient of the Norden Distinguished Teacher Award in Veterinary Medicine, Dr. Perman taught University of Minnesota DVM students clinical pathology for more than 40 years. In his long tenure at the veterinary college, Dr. Perman also served as department chair, associate dean for research and graduate studies, and director of the veterinary hospital laboratories. During his years at the University, he and his wife enjoyed travels to South Africa, Japan and Europe sharing his knowledge with others.

In his retirement, he was active in the Veterinary College Alumni Society and his church community at St, Michael’s, a major supporter of the Roseville area food shelf, and a member of the Roseville Kiwanis from which he recently received a distinguished service award. He enjoyed gardening, canning, hunting, fishing, a good book, and time with his family and friends around good food. He especially enjoyed cooking in quanity and did so for the veterinary college for St. Michael’s, and for Loaves and Fishes.

Survivors include his beloved wife of 61 years, Virginia "Ginny" Perman; four daughters, Laura (Tom Ryan) Perman, Joan (Jim) Bertelsen, Jean (Steve) Olson, and Karen (Tim) Borgert; nine grandchildren, Nate, Ryan, Erick and Katie Bertelsen, Kyle and Ryan Olson, and Jessica, Christopher, and Marissa Borgert; two sisters, Kay Speich and Margaret (Herb) Meisner; and many nieces and nephews.

Preceding him in death were his parents; a daughter, Vicki; and siblings Joe, Ann, DeDe, Mary and Tina.

Vic would want us all to care for those less fortunate than ourselves as we continue our journey without him by our side. Memorials preferred to St. Michael’s Lutheran Church or the University of Minnesota Veterinary College.

The Roseville Memorial Chapel assisted the family with arrangements.
