Jenswold, Pvt. George (1910? - 20 SEP 1944)

The sad news came to Mr. and Mrs. Fred Jenswold in a telegram from the war department, Monday forenoon that their son, Pvt. George Jenswold, was killed in action in France.  The date given was Sept. 20, 1944, and the Adjutant General’s message stated that a letter would follow giving more information as soon as possible.

Many of our folks knew George well, as he came here a young man when the family moved to the Zeller farm north of the village (Humbird, Clark Co., Wis.).  He remained here for a while and was then employed elsewhere.  He enlisted in the army four years ago this month, before being called in the selective service, and for three years he had been overseas without a furlough home.  For some time he was with the ski troops, and was among the first to be sent to Iceland.  He was in Ireland and England before goring to France with the army soon after the first landings on D-day.

The last letter to the home folks was written Aug. 30 and received by them Sept. 12.  As he had written home very regularly since being overseas, there was beginning to be much anxiety felt by his father and mother over the lack of letters when this telegram came.

George was a most likable young man, and was noted for his bravery.  He was in his 34th years.
