Poppe, Josephine (3 JUL 1881 - 19 JUL 1960)

The end of her earthly life came to Mrs. Henry Poppe, nee Josephine La Flex, Tuesday, July 19, 1960 at about 12:45 p.m., at Victory Memorial Hospital, Stanley.  She had suffered much in the past year, and been a patient at the hospital for many, many weeks.  It was her own wish that the Lord might relieve her of her earthly sufferings; and He answered her prayers at the right time.  She fell asleep in Jesus as a firm believer in His blood and righteousness, having attained an age of 79 years, 3 months and 24 days.

She was born in the Town of Reseburg, Clark County, Wis., on March 25, 1881, the daughter of Peter La Flex and his wife, Caliste, nee Dolph.  Throughout her life she remained a resident of Clark County.

On Aug. 25, 1946 she was confirmed by Pastor W. Schedler, and became a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church at Withee.  She was always very faithful in attendance as long as her physical condition permitted.

She was married to Henry Poppe on July 3, 1897, just 62 years ago.  Ten children were born to the happy union, eight of whom survive their mother; also 30 grandchildren and 48 great-grandchildren mourn her passing, besides seven brothers and her aged husband.

Funeral services were held in St. John’s Lutheran Church, Withee, Saturday July 23 at 2:00 p.m. with the pastor preaching on Rev. 2:10, "The Crown of Life."  Mrs. Ted Klabon sang two hymns.  Mrs. Herman Rabska was the organist.  Interment followed in Riverside Cemetery.

Mrs. Henry Poppe is survived by the following children, Clarence Poppe, Eau Claire; Mrs. Richard (Sadie) Sorenson, Minneapolis; Mrs. Walter (Barbara) Emerson, Withee; Oliver Poppe, Lakewood, Calif.; Mrs. Robert (Calista) Collins, Chippewa Falls; Mrs. Charles (Myrtle) Amundson, Chicago, Ill.; Russell Poppe, St. Paul, Minn., and Kenneth Poppe, Clquet, Minn.

Her brothers surviving her are Slex, Thiensville; Louis, Menomonie; Leander, Melrose Park; Harry, Barnes; Jesse, Thorp; Frank, Gilman, and Ernie, Minneapolis, Minn.  All bear the family name La Flex.  Two sisters, Myrtle and Effie, had preceded her in death.

The deceased was endowed with a friendly personality and knew no bitterness towards anyone.  She was laways helpful to others, even in her invalid condition.  Towards her church she was as liberal as her means allowed.  But above all, her trust in Christ’s righteousness is what made her a Christian.
